Scotland has a rich and varied natural heritage consisting of plants, animals and their habitats for wildlife watching. Mackays self catering Scotland cottages offers attractive Scottish cottages, which are located at such places, where you can get close to Scotland wildlife.
One of the many reasons for choosing one of our Scotland holiday cottages is that it allows you to get close to Scotland wildlife. The sea off the west of Scotland is one of the few places to get close to whales. The Isle of Skye is a good base with boat trips leaving the sound of Sleat on the south of the island. Beware the best months for whalespotting are June to mid September. There are no guarantees but Minke whales and Humpback whales are often sited.

Close by embarkation point for trips, in Ardvasar, we have a charming detached Scottish cottage sitting in a secluded leafy corner of this pretty coastal village. The cottage is exceptionally well presented and the interior is most attractive and comfortable with much attention to detail. Ardvasar is a peaceful place at the end of the road along the Sleat peninsula and the cottage is within easy walking distance of the shoreline, village shop and hotel. Known as the "Garden of Skye" this area has a rich fertile landscape and a fascinating rugged coastline with coves and beaches.

Oban is another fine west coast location for spotting porpoise, dolphins, minke whales and basking sharks. The Firth of Lorn is designated a Special Area of Conservation and so has rich marine life to experience from the many tours departing the quay of Oban. It is well worth doing your research and asking captains whether whales have been spotted recently in the known hotspots.

We have three excellent apartments situated on the esplanade in Oban. These may not be Scottsh cottages but each has a lovely view of the sea and surrounding islands. Private parking is available for residents but these would be an ideal choice for visitors without transport. The apartments are just five minutes walk from the town centre. Each apartment is well-maintained and comfortably furnished and overlooks Oban Bay with a lovely view across the sea to the islands.

Part of our country house collection Kilmore is also superbly located. Set next to a walled garden of 1.5 acres, this delightful traditional stone-built cottage Scotland was originally built to house the gardener for the 1000 acre estate surrounding a large Victorian mansion but has now been extended and extensively renovated to create a warm, elegant home in the country house style. This charming cottage has its own pretty enclosed garden with barbecue and teak furniture, and guests may also use a picnic site (with pinic table) on the top of the hill behind the cottage with superb views over the valley. Kilmore sleeps 8 and is just 4 miles from Oban where many boat trips depart.

Whichever of the many cottages in Scotland you choose to stay in we hope you are lucky and experience the wonders of the Sealife in Scotland’s seas.
