Cairns as a pick-up destination is the gateway to tropical Northern Queensland. AS a city it is cosmopolitain and very popular with tourists from overseas, due to the climate and proximity to things such as the Great Barrier Reef. In the city centre, there is a public ‘lagoon’ swimming pool where people escape the heat, and there are beaches to the north and south of the city. The promenade near the lagoon is perfect for lazy afternoon walks, sunbathing and people-watching, or barbecuing with friends on the free barbeques in the area.

Down the coast to the south you will find the multicultural town of Innisfail. Originally occupied by 5 different aboriginal groups, the first Europeans in the town were the survivors of a shipwreck. Now, it is a melting pot of Aboriginal, European, Indian and East Asian inhabitants. The community spirit of the town was cemented after considerable destruction from Cyclone Larry in 2006, and it is a pretty and friendly place to call in to. Further down the coast is the beautiful Kurrimine Beach National Park, and 3 more after that- Edmund Kennedy National Park, Hinchinbrook Island National Park and Girringun National Park. Explore the natural beauty of Australia down this part of Queensland!

Above Cairns, getting more and more tropical, is Port Douglas. This picturesque port has cruise ships calling in often. 4 Mile Beach across from the harbour is just gorgeous, an amazing place to swim, walk and enjoy the stunning scenery and climate of northern Queensland. Daintree National Park is also up near Port Douglas, and is a treasure, listed on the World Heritage List. The Park is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland, and it has exceptional biodiversity, largely consisting of rainforest. It is believed that it is the oldest existing area of rainforest.

For a longer trip, Cooktown and the Cape York Peninsula are within reach. Civilisation begins to wane as one ventures further North, and it is not always possible to reach the tip of Cape York, Australia’s northernmost point, by road. However if roads are open, it is worth the journey!

Inland from Cairns is Mount Isa, a town built on mining. It is often called the ‘Oasis of the Outback’ as it is a drop of civilisation in the sea of wilderness, there is opportunity for adventure in Mount Isa. 4WD outback-style is a popular activity! Surface tours of the mines are also available.

Although a very long trip that would take several days, Alice Springs is also on the list of possible destinations for a Cairns pick up, especially as part of an outback exploration trip. ‘The Alice’ is right near the geographic centre of the country, and is a hub of civilisation in the desert! The famous Ayers Rock/Uluru is close to the town.
