As we all know, dental ultrasonic scaler plays an important role in our cosmetic dentistry. But how much you know about ultrasonic scaler? Do you know how it works? Do you know its advantage and disadvantage? And how about it’s contraindications? Don’t worry, this article will tell you everything about dental ultrasonic scaler.
1. What is ultrasonic scaler?
Ultrasonic scaler is ultrasonic equipment with a ultrasonic scaler tip for supplying high-frequency vibrations, used to remove plaque and calculus from teeth and bits of inflamed tissue from the walls of the gingival crevice. This dental equipment helps to locate and remove any unpleasant stains and plaque between teeth, the front and backsides of the teeth, and along the gum line.
2. How it works?
Ultrasonic scalers are related devices which are used by dental practitioners on a routine basis for purposes of maintaining dental hygiene. Unlike the dental scaler, ultrasonic scalers produce soft ultrasonic vibrations which are combined with water flow to effectively remove plaque and bacteria debris from the teeth surface. This device has become quite popular with dental practitioners as its light weight and touch help to reduce wrist fatigue as well as tissue trauma since the device does not have sharp edges; the dentist merely guides the scaler on the teeth surfaces. In addition, the soft ultrasonic vibrations and the ultrasonic tip spray produced by dental ultrasonic scalers make these devices more efficient in the removal of dental plaque. During this dental procedure the practitioner does not need to continually rinse the device since the water flow allows for high visibility throughout the procedure.
3. What are the contraindications?
(1) Patients with infectious disease.

(3) Use with a light touch, does not require a firm finger rest
(4) Irrigation of pocket simultaneously
(5) Washed field visibility
(6) Increased patient comfort & acceptance.
(7) Less tiring for the operator
(8) Scaling can be done in reduced time
(9) Less tissue manipulation
(10) Instruments do not need sharpening
5. What is the disadvantage?
(1) Less tactile sense of root surface
(2) Produce microscopic rippling of root surface
(3) Requires high speed evacuation
(4) Produces contaminated aerosol
(5) Risks to patients or operators with Cardiac pacemaker
