The function of a Fuel Injector in your Car is to spray atomized fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The Fuel Injector of a continuous Fuel Injection system sprays fuel into the intake port on a continuous basis this type of Fuel Injector is suitable for the use in Cars. The intermittent Fuel Injection system has the Fuel Injector spray fuel into the intake port at specific intervals basis this type of Fuel Injectors is suitable for heavy duty diesel engines.
The throttle body Fuel Injection system has Fuel Injectors placed over injector valves, the fuel is sprayed into the throttle body. A multiple port Fuel Injection system has an injector for each cylinder which sprays the required fuel directly at the intake valve which is therefore able to deliver more consistent amount of fuel to each cylinder and as a result more power is generated with lower emissions levels.
A Fuel Injector is a small nozzle through which liquid fuel is injected at high pressure rates. The Fuel injection system consists of several Sensors as every time you start your vehicle, the ECU scans all these Sensors to verify their functionality. The "Check Engine" Light gets activated in the dashboard whenever any of these Sensors fail. The data collected by Sensors is processed through the ECU to establish the amount of time the Fuel Injectors are supposed to remain open while injecting fuel into your engine’s intake ports. The Fuel Injectors are usually open for a few milliseconds at a time as each Fuel Injector consists of a nozzle and a valve which inject the fuel pumped in from a Fuel Pump located farther back in the fuel supply system.
Modern day Car's with a Fuel Injected engines are dependable engines which responds to quicker throttle transitions, quicker engine starting times and operates at extremely high or low ambient temperatures with increased maintenance intervals, and efficient fuel efficiency. The Fuel Injection system does away with the Choke, which the Carburetor based vehicles engines operated, which had starting issues in colder weather conditions.
A faulty Fuel Injector can fail in open position and send excess fuel into the exhaust system which may lead to failure of the Catalytic Converter and poor engine performance. A leak in the Fuel Injector body or a leak in the o-ring seal can produce an air vacuum leak inside the manifold, triggering in a poor combustion mixture ratio in the engine function.
Fuel injectors can be checked for proper functioning by cranking on the Car engine and listening around for a distinct clicking sound, which should be produced by each Fuel Injector. If there is no clicking sound heard it is is evident that the Fuel Injector is at fault and requires quick replacement. As the Fuel Injection system consists of electronic components and Sensors. It must be kept clean and well calibrated to maximize the Car's engine’s power and efficiency and to reduce gas consumption issues.
It is obvious, that a damaged Fuel Injector would lead the fuel to be wasted by leaking from the body or would supply excessive fuel when the internal springs are found to be damaged. Most high on mileage Car Engines are most likely prospects for regular Fuel Injector cleaning. Regular cleaning of the Fuel Injectors every 25,000 to 30,000 miles keeps it performing at peak efficiency.
