One of the best ways to get started in event photography is to start working in the field as soon as possible, even if you begin working for little or no money for friends and family. It is very hard to win clients without a portfolio or website for them to reference. In order to build up your experience, photograph graduations, weddings, religious confirmations, and parties that involves close friends or family members. Even if you are only reimbursed for the cost of film and printing, you will have photographs to show to potential clients interested in having you work for them.

Having a deeper understanding of why you are where you are can dramatically decrease your nerves and level of stress, while increasing the rate at which you are able to shoot. This added layer of understanding is necessary in order to give you more ideas that may, in return, result in photos that satisfy and/or impress your client to an extent they did not expect. At the same time don’t get fooled. By knowing why you are there will prevent you in losing track from your work. In order to capture the real sense of the event you should have a good presence of mind and adequate understanding about the event.

It may take a little time to mentally adjust but the main thing you'll need to get used to know how to configure calculations in your head at a faster-than-average rate. You'll need to understand how to effectively make up for light loss, or how to effectively cut exposure down with ISO speed, shutter speed, aperture, etc. This may sound difficult at first but after doing it for an hour or two it becomes very easy and should be no problem if you know what you're doing. Your client is paying you for your photography skills; this entails not only composition but an understanding of how exposure works. After all, anyone can go around with a camera set to auto and take pictures.

Another great way to get started with event photography is Apprenticeship. As an apprentice to a photographer, you will assist in the daily work that goes into running a photography business. Such work may include calling or following up with potential clients, seeing projects through to completion, and working on marketing such as updating the photographer's website. The apprenticeship is same as internship. As an apprenticeship you would be subjected to work on different locations. This is the reason why apprenticeship is the best way to get started with event photography.
