Herbal remedies have been around for years and many people count on them every day. Some carry a strong belief that there is no need to rely on medications. Among the alternative medicine approaches, essential oils are used for a number of different conditions and offer a variety of benefits. This article introduces a few of the advantages of essential oils.

After a stress filled day, it would be nice to come home and just relax. Some have found that they can get fast relaxation by taking a warm bath using essential oils like lavender. Lavender oil creates a very soothing experience that allows one to clear the mind and say goodbye to the stress of the day. The soothing properties of lavender essential oil may also be used for massage. Many therapists will have oils on hand and ready to pull out. A mix of the oils and the aromas can relax one so much that it puts the client to sleep.

Peppermint oil can have the opposite effect. It stimulates and energizes so it's not an oil to apply in the evening, unless you specifically want to stay awake. Peppermint is great for maintaining alertness when you need a quick pick me up or for driving long distances.

Essential oils can be made from a number of different elements like herbs, plants, flowers and fruits. There are various recipes for creating custom oil blends and scents that retain the essential healing properties of the plant.

Oils from plants are naturally anti-viral. When you think about it, it makes sense that nature would provide plants with their own immune system to fight off disease and bacteria. It is believed that essential oils properly distilled can retain and convey their immune building properties. For example, oils useful for fighting off colds include lemon, orange, myrrh, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree (melaleuca,) frankincense and lavender.

Many prescribed drugs originated from sources from plants and herbs. Lavender and bergamot have been known to help with depression and fatigue. Oregano is a powerful antiseptic and antiviral aid as well as an antihistamine, like for relief of poison ivy. Rosemary appears to help stimulate mental activity as well as offer relaxation benefits.

Essentials oils can be inhaled or applied topically to the skin. However, it is always advised to first test a small drop of oil on the bottom of the foot before applying elsewhere to see if there is an allergic reaction, even though this is unusual.

Oils should be stored in dark glass bottles away from sunlight, heat or extreme cold. Keep them away from children. And as a cautionary note, pregnant women should always consult with a doctor before using any essential oils. For maximum effectiveness, use therapeutic grade oils like those from living young oils.
