You’ve seen roads during rain storms that are flooded with water and have large divots and grooves. You’ve probably driven through parking lots that produced a splash so large you thought you were in a car wash. Or remember that road that was full of potholes? All of these surfaces are some kind of pavement. A hard surface that cars drive on and people walk on. Pavement is used in parking lots, in roadways, and other projects. One type is permeable pavers which offers several benefits.

What is a permeable paver? Permeable pavers are in its simplest description, a breathable pavement surface. That doesn’t sound like much, but it is really an innovative design. Permeable pavers look like little octagons placed together in the street, parking lot, or road. This design allows water to drain off into the soils which prevents flooding and rain water from building up and becoming a hazard to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Permeable pavers benefits also include helping the environment. In cities and areas where there is a lot of paving present from parking lots, streets, roads, sidewalks and walkways, water runoff occurs that sweeps chemicals, pollutants, debris, pesticides, fertilizers, and other harmful substances into our water systems. This usually occurs via storm drains where the pavement dumps all the water into drains that are lead into rivers and streams. This is dangerous to our water ways and can contaminate drinking water and kill ecosystems in the water. Permeable pavers eliminate storm runoff by allowing the water to drain into the pavement and back into the soil, at a rate that prevents run off and flooding.

Not only do permeable pavers eliminate storm runoff, but they also filter out water. Underneath the pavement the pavers have stones or sand that filters the water as it runs through it. Permeable pavers effectively eliminate oil, grease, fuels, and other contaminates that occur in populated areas. This filtered water then drains into the ground. The cleaner water refills the water table and can be used by plants and vegetation in that area. Indirectly, permeable pavers help wildlife in the area and gives them access to clean water.

Economically, permeable pavers can save money in the long run. Some paved areas need to have drainage systems created before they are paved over otherwise the paved areas can sink into the ground and need repair. Permeable pavers save money since the drainage system is already a part of the design and construction. Contractors and builders will save money and these savings will trickle down to the owner and consumer. Because permeable pavers have their own drainage system, they can withstand heavy traffic better than other types. When they do need repairs, fixing one section is easy and does not require maintenance to the entire area.

Permeable pavers provide numerous benefits to contractors, builders, consumers, the community, and even the environment. They offer a cost effective way for people and businesses to help the environment while creating a long lasting product.
