Like other community weddings, in Christian Matrimony there are many functions before the actual day of wedding. The Christian population in India is less as compared to other religions. Dance, songs and good food marks the end of Christian matrimony.

Christianity is one of the major religions in India and has a deep impact on the culture and the people. It is a new religion in the country as compared to the advent of Islam and Buddhism. With the arrival of Christianity in the southern part of India, many people belonging to other castes embraced the religion because of its newer approach and concepts. The Christian population in India is less as compared to other religions. There are Protestants and Catholic Christians communities in India. Christian Matrimony rituals and customs for these communities are similar. There is a church wedding during the daytime followed by a reception party in the night.
Like other community weddings, in Christian Matrimony there are many functions before the actual day of wedding. One of the important pre wedding rituals is the shower party. This is an informal party organized by the female friends and relatives of the bride. The female members of the bride’s family celebrate the occasion with party. The bride’s friends celebrate the end of her maidenhood. Her friend’s jokes of marriage and the life post the wedding. This fun-filled party has good food and drinks to celebrate the occasion. Dances, songs and games are part of every shower party of the bride. The guests showers gifts on the bride. The bride also cut a cake that has a thimble inside somewhere. After the cake is cut and slices done, it is distributed to the unmarried girls. According to custom in the Christian Matrimony, the unmarried girl who gets the slice with the thimble inside will be the next one to marry.
For the male members, the pre-wedding Stag Party is very event. This is a fun-filled party hosted by the groom’s friends. This is an all men party and no women members are allowed. This is party is hosted few days before the wedding day. The groom’s and his friends celebrate the good days of his bachelorhood. The friends also wish the groom for the very best of married life. The groom and his friends have a night of drinking, dance and games.
The Christian Matrimony Rituals on the Wedding Day:
Welcoming the bride is the first ritual where the groom waits for the bride outside the church. He sends a car or a carriage to pick her and the bridesmaid to the venue of the wedding. On her arrival, the best man of the wedding, who is usually a groom’s friend or relative, welcomes the bride with a bouquet of flowers.
After receiving the flowers, the bride comes to the groom and they walk side by side inside the church. The bridesmaids follow the couple to the altar where the priest is waiting. The family members of the bride and the groom are already seated on the front rows. Other relatives and friends are seated after them. On reaching near the priest, the couple is welcomed by the priest.
Then they begin the wedding mass. The priest reads passages from the Bible, the holy book of Christians. Also in between, hymns are sung by the family members and guests presents inside the church. After the reading of bible is completed, the priest begins the homily and tells the couple the importance and responsibilities of marriage.
The couple, bride and groom, confirms their choice to the priest and after exchange of rings, the priest declares them man and wife.
The Christian Matrimony ends with the couple receiving blessings from the priests and the family members. Friends and guests congratulate the couple and wish them best for their married life. The couple comes out of the church arm in arm.
In the evening, a grand reception party is thrown with many more guests joining the celebrations. The couple cuts the wedding cake and shares a slice with each other. Dance, songs and good food marks the end of Christian matrimony.
