Electronic Cigarettes Likely to Be Banned on US Flights
An electronic cigarette is a small electronic device that looks like a cigarette but instead of burning smoke it produces a tar free and odorless vapor that is just like smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette. It offers tobacco , menthol and many other flavors and strengths that a consumer can choose from. One of the highlights of the product is that you can smoke it just about anywhere. People are using them in offices, airports, bars, restaurants, and many other places that have smoking bans in effect. A recent trend caught on with these odorless cigarettes on airplanes and many people were using the e cigarette while on the plane. This was just put to an end by the DOT.
After the failing efforts of the Food and Drug Administration to implement a ban on electronic or e cigarettes, another authoritative body in the country has decided to make a move in this direction. This time around, it is the U.S. Department of Transportation, which is about to try and curb the profits of e-cig distributors and sellers.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has written a letter to Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey about the department’s intentions to issue an official restriction on electronic cigarette on US flights. The news about the ban, which is most likely to be issued this spring, has already provoked outrage from e cigarette distributors and consumers who prefer to buy electronic cigarettes.
Lautenberg is credited for writing the legislation that banned smoking on commercial flights in 1987. This time, the senator has decided to give enough time to review and understand the rule clearly. The department, on the other hand, is keen enough to implement the rule, and it has been issuing notices to airlines regarding the same.
There has also been some confusion over the interpretation of instructions issued by the Department of Transportation by air travelers. Interestingly, many passengers believe electronic cigarettes are prohibited from use only during landings and take-offs, as is the case with other electronic devices.
This is not just one issue that has resulted from the growing acceptance of e-cigarettes. These cigarettes consist of plastic or metal casing heat liquid nicotine that results in vapors for inhaling. According to the reports, these cigarettes are safer than traditional ones that contain thousands of chemicals. Since the mid-2000s, the consumers of these products have increased by the thousands.
The FDA has already faced legal defeat while attempting to ban e-cigs, though it is still in the process to design regulations for these products. What the Department of Transportation decides about the use of electronic cigarettes on airplanes is something that could affect the popularity of these items.
