Fruits and cash crops, like seed potatoes, ginger, vegetable seeds, apples, stone fruits, etc. are grown in the State. Wheat, maize and rice are the major food crops. Besides apples, excellent variety of plums, peaches and apricots is also grown. Forests cover 68% of the total area of the State.
Wildlife
Himachal Pradesh has a varied topography, climate and forest cover and is endowed with a vast variety of flora and fauna. From times immemorial, this tract is known for its wilderness, landscapes, beautiful forests and wildlife.
On the other side, Gurkhas were consolidating their power to establish their rule in this state. They managed to defeat Maharaja Sansar Chand and gain power. However, their effort to win over the fort of Kangra was crushed by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. This lead to Anglo-Gurkha war and Gurkhas came in direct contact with Britishers. Gurkhas were, then, expelled from the states lying east of river sutluj. It led to the emergence of Britishers as a supreme power.
Climate
Climate of Himachal Pradesh India varies with varying altitudes in different parts of the state. Himachal in winters becomes freezing cold with temperatures dropping as low as the freezing point at times. Summers in Himachal Pradesh are cool or hot depending on altitudinal variations.
It is advisable to carry heavy woolens while on Himachal Pradesh tours during winter months. In fact the nights and mornings get colder as the month of October approaches.

Air :Vayudoot services connect Shimla with Kullu, Chandigarh and Delhi. Delhi is in turn connected with Culcutta by Indian Airlines flights. Jagson Airlines has also flights from Delhi to Shimla
Rail: Shimla is connected by a narrow guage railway line with Kalka (90 kms) which in turn is connected with the major cities in India.
Road: Regular bus services connect Shimla with Chandigarh 117 kms, Kullu 220 kms, Manali 260 kms, Delhi 343 kms, Mandi 150 kms, Pathankot 380 kms, Ambala 151 kms, Chail 43 kms, Dehradun 240 kms.
