Have you got Venetian blinds for your office? These blinds are the perfect example of “neighbor’s envy, owner’s pride”, and are simply unparalleled when it comes to class, style and durability. And then you are obviously impressed with the awesome energy efficiency that you enjoy with the Venetian blinds.
But then, akin to all the good things out there, wooden Venetian blinds ask for some basic maintenance to stay clean and shiny all the year round.
Weekly cleanup
Your Venetian blinds must get a weekly cleanup and it would save much of the hard work later. You can use a static duster or your vacuum would be handy as well. For manual dusting, go for a wool duster or a microfiber cloth – just make sure to close down the blinds beforehand for an easy clean-up. If you are using your vacuum cleaner, go for its soft brush attachment for all the dusting work.
Brush downward always
Always brush downward while cleaning the blind slats. You should not follow the upward motion as it can unhook the slats.
Sticky stubborn stains
Your blinds may develop sticky stubborn stains over time but don’t fret- you can wipe them out easily. A damp paper cloth or soft cloth and good pressure would be enough to wipe out the stain. But then, before you clean the stain, don’t forget to wipe out the loose dust with a dry cloth. After you clean the stain with damp cloth, dry up the area with a clean lint-free cloth. Keep the slats open while working on the stain. Otherwise, you can also clean with a nice soft paintbrush. Just dip the brush in a liquid-fabric softener & run it across your slats.
The Don’ts to remember:
- Never put the blinds in water as wood tends to absorb moisture. When it comes to stubborn and sticky stains, go for slightly damp (but not wet) rag.
- Never clean or dust the Venetian blinds straight back & forth- rather you should follow the left-to-right or right-to-left direction.
- Never put pressure on the blinds when you need support to reach out to the higher slats. Rather get a ladder or stool for a comfortable cleanup.
Finally, if the slats are too dirty and have not been cleaned for long, consider a professional cleanup once every 2 or 3 years to keep your slats anew.
