Duran Duran can be considered a precursor that brought the beats to todays music. Still loved by many fans, they will have the opportunity to see the band at the Future Music Festival that happens in March.
Synth pop legends Duran Duran will tour Australia in March 2012, announced that the tour will feature singles from the critically acclaimed album “All You Need is Now”. The Future Music Festival will feature the band, which turned the sound of 80s experimental New Wave punk into a near nonstop string of smash hits in the 1980s. Duran Duran was among the first groups to hit the beach during the great second British Invasion of the 80s. While the 90s saw them in disarray and remission, the original line-up reunited in the early 2000s. With their sound cemented into our culture, the group is truly one of the progenitors of modern electronic music.

The British Invasion, Revisited

World pop charts were in disarray in the late 70s. Post-disco led to punk, and the emergence of the synthesizer, digital drum machines, and digital recording poised the world of pop music for fundamental change. MTV was just getting started, and the channel needed content. American acts just weren’t producing the cinematically-influenced pop-dose music videos that Britain, indelibly influenced by experimental filmmaking from the Beatles and other pop bands, cranked out on a regular basis. MTV filled their blocks with the emerging British New Wave. While The Police and Annie Lennox garnered success and critical acclaim, Duran Duran led the charge. They became one of the biggest New Wave pop successes of the time, thanks to a well-developed sound, sexualized attitude, and provocative videos.

A String of Success

Their first massive British single, Girls on Film, featured a video so sexualized it had to be massively edited before being played on TV. Its provocative, softcore imagery polarized audiences, giving MTV just the kind of controversial success it was looking for. Duran Duran followed up with several hits, peaking with “Hungry Like The Wolf,” which received massive exposure on the music channel. In the early to mid 80s, the band became known as the “Fab Five,” with a popularity threatening to eclipse Beatlemania. The group released three albums at an extremely rapid pace, capitalizing on the relative short term memory of pop music. In 1985, they recorded the only James Bond theme ever to hit number one in America, A View to a Kill. In the mid to late 80s, the band essentially burned out from exhaustion, and gradually fragmented. Though more albums would be released under the Duran Duran name, the lineup became a revolving door.

A Reunion to Remember

After over a decade of side projects, Simon Le Bon—still headlining the band called Duran Duran—spearheaded a charge to reunite the group’s original lineup for a comeback. From 2003-2004, the group headlined sold out tours in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, defying expectations and reestablishing themselves as synth pop juggernauts. Their synth-heavy sound had survived the alt-rock speed bump of the early 90s, and came back in full force, backed up with newfound musicianship.

An Unforgettable, Influential Sound and Look

Today, Duran Duran’s 80s tracks sound remarkably prescient. Today’s dance club music sounds eerily similar, with thumping drum machine beats; waves of layered, modulated synth sound; and drowned out, erotic lyrical themes. Girls on Film, aside from its distinctly 80s vocals and phrasing, sounds exactly like the club hits of David Guetta, Franz Ferdinand, or The Killers. The androgynous, glittery look they helped popularize became is still emulated today. Constantly singled out for remixes, both in the dance club and on hip hop records, it is stunning how little club music has really changed in the three decades since Duran Duran led the New Wave charge, paved the way for MTV, and put the last nail in the coffin of disco.

The group hits Australia in March.
