In simple terms, dual diagnosis can be defined as the coexistence of mental disorder and other issues, such as alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, or sexual addiction. Generally, such treatments combine a drug addiction program or rehab program with effective psychiatric treatment while giving the patient plenty of time to recover.
When people are affected by depression or other mood disorders, they usually turn to alcohol or drugs, instead of seeking psychiatric help. Without understanding that their condition is treatable and curable, these people rely on stimulants to ease depression and feel better. However, once the effect of stimulants diminishes, the patient is again moody. So dual diagnosis aims to treat both these issues simultaneously and help the patient overcome the symptoms related to both.

Here is a closer look at how drugs and alcohol worsen mood swings or depression:

*Drugs: It is not unusual for people - especially youngsters - to turn to prescription or recreational drugs to ease depression and feel better. One of the most popular drugs is cocaine. This drug affects the brain and induces a euphoric feeling in the user. However, after the effect of the drug wears off, the user feels even more depressed and is forced to consume an increasingly higher amount of the drug. Dual diagnosis will help the patient get rid of the drug and avoid feeling depressed.

*Alcohol: When people feel sad, depressed, or lonely, they consume alcohol to feel better. Alcohol can numb depression as well as physical pain or ache related to mental disorder. However, once the alcoholic effect wanes, the person experiences headache, dehydration, and even nausea. Without proper intervention, the person soon gets badly addicted.

When a person is treated at a dual diagnosis treatment center, he will usually receive a powerful combination of detox, prescription medication, and psychotherapy. Dual diagnosis will help the patient keep depressive feelings at bay while effectively recovering from the addiction.
