“Action is the highest perfection and drawing forth of the utmost power, vigor, and activity of man's nature”- Bishop Robert South. Before the advent of language or written language, drawings were the means of communication. The drawings in the caves of Ajanta and Elora bear the history of the ancient period. The drawings have a visual appeal in them and thus can catch everyone’s attention. Even kids in their initial years love to draw different shapes and figures in their art copies. They think of it as a way of playing with the colors and the crayons. But it is more than that.
When kids sketch a particular picture or shapes, they actually express their inner creativity. A kid can color a sunflower in red or blue, though in real world it is not so. This kind of activity shows their way of looking at things. Drawing is always considered to be one of the most important activities that need to be nurtured and developed in kids. In the initial stages, drawing consists of making a mark or leaving a trail on a surface. As the children learn this art form, they start drawing more complex things. Even writing can be taken as a special form of drawing.
There are some people who have very good handwriting and to nurture this quality drawing plays a great role. To develop kids’ perception and thought, drawing can serve as an effective tool. It is viewed by many that this art can be furnished through practice and instruction. There are also people who have demonstrated their power of creativity by nurturing this art without any supervision. But it is so only in case of exceptional children. In most cases, kids need the encouragement from the side of their elders to be a good painter or so. As drawing needs the full concentration of the person who is engaged in the activity, so it developed a disciplinary manner in them.
The activity of art help children express their inner feelings, communicate with others and create an order in them. There are children who lack the skill of venting out their thoughts or feelings. Art give them a chance to articulate their inner creativity in the white pages of paper. There is a methodical component to art that allows children to creatively explore new ideas and make sense of them through association. This creative way of self exploration stimulates the brain to grow in the areas that learn how to observe.
The pre-primary and primary schools use this tool as an effective way of teaching the toddlers different social norms. Children who frequently practice drawing often discover how to make observations and drawings that seem advanced for their age. Drawing and other observational art projects such as collages and collections encourage an eye for detail and the ability to differentiate or find similarities that might be overlooked by someone who is not trying to create an artistic rendering. Drawing has physical benefits also. Through this, kids learn the art of hand-eye coordination. This is why, beginning at an early stage, encouraging children to explore their drawing ability can set them up for great success.
