A new 5 year study in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine by the European Male Ageing Study Group (EMAS) has finally acknowledged that the male menopause or andropause, which they ponderously and incorrectly term ‘Late Onset Male Hypogonadism (LOH)’, actually exists.
However, they consider it a rare condition which occurs in less than 2% of men over the age of 50.

Even the lead author in this study has published papers saying that this condition should properly be called ‘Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS)’, which is important in its recognition and not just playing with long medical words.

Firstly, it is not ‘Late Onset’, because a report by Dr Malcolm Carruthers soon to be published in the Aging Male Journal on 10,000 men who filled in an on-line screening questionnaire, showed that 40% were below the age of 40.

Secondly, it is not hypogonadism, or the testes being under-active and failing to produce enough testosterone. More often, as Dr Carruthers has reported in an article in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, it is caused by resistance to the action of testosterone due to stress, obesity, excess alcohol, medicines, too much testosterone binding protein in the blood (SHBG) and a host of other factors which are not usually taken into account.

The EMAS study, by focussing on arbitrary and incorrectly analysed lab test results, and largely ignoring patient symptoms by using an unsuitable and age-related questionnaire, has under-reported the true incidence of TDS, and discouraged GP’s from recognising and treating the symptoms. Lasting over 7 years, and costing over 6 Euros, the EMAS study has not resulted in a single patient getting treatment, and may have prevented many men getting the testosterone treatment they need.
