Because of the common misconception that downloadable game are firmly for the casual crowd, most diehard gamers aren’t particularly interested in this category. For them, many downloadable games simply involve brainless drudgery of tasks that’s seemingly endless. Even sports enthusiasts try to avoid them, wishing to find something with a little more depth and “sense.” However, this misconception is beginning to clear up as an increasing number of video games are becoming more and more accessible through download, with majority of them being well-crafted work in spite of the low budget and production costs.

Runic Games’ “Torchlight” is a perfect example of this. The game is known to be a lighter and easier version of Blizzard’s “Diablo” series. True enough, most of the developers and designers of the game were part of the team that created the mainstream action-RPG game. Torchlight uses simple controls to let players access numerous skills across three built-in character classes. Most gamers would notice that is a bit of irreverence to the tone’s theme, in contrast to Diablo’s dark bleakness. Runic Games also encouraged fan-made content so players are allowed to contribute a number of mods for additional dungeons, new character classes or to just modify existing features.

Meanwhile, there are a handful of free downloadable games from one of Enterbrain’s many game design suites. “Vacant Sky, Vol. 1: Contention” is an epic separated into three parts, while “Visions & Voices” brings a distinctive feel of horror and mystery to traditional RPG storylines and gameplay. These games are made by a number of gamers outside of Japan who have effectively created their own spins on the RPG genre. Of course, it helps a lot that RPG Maker XP and RPG Maker VX are now made available in English. Nevertheless, there are still hundreds of potentially impressive projects out there that are not solely dedicated to the RPG bracket.

You might have heard the very famous “Plants vs. Zombies”. This game is one of the best games that have simple gameplays. Yet, ask anyone and they’ll tell you how addicting it is. It’s a simple point-and-click method, but you have to think about your strategies. You have to plan which plants go where and how best to use those plants to defend your home. It allows you to make use of different skills that are only usually utilized in highly-competitive RTS settings. The number of modes adds replay value to an already very fun game. It’s easily one of the best examples of a game that doesn’t need great graphics to be enjoyed.

Then there’s “Dwarf Fortress.” This game relies heavily on ASCII graphics to the point where it has no other visual representation, so the gameplay had better be damn good. For people with certain temperaments or senses of humor, it is ridiculously good. The game focuses on the titular dwarven fortress, which the player builds and populates with little dwarves. There is a surprising amount of things that can be done in the game, particularly with how randomized the fortresses and hazards can be. Plus there’s always the option to be sadistic and find new and intriguing ways to kill off one’s dwarves. It isn’t for everyone, but certain mindsets will get a suitably satisfying kick out of it.
