Being best friend is a privilege, but at times it’s hard work, especially when you have to prepare a party for mom-to-be and you haven’t really been to one yet. Nothing to worry, putting together a baby shower is much easier than organizing a bachelorette party, you just need to stick to some general rules.
A woman’s best friend is there in the most important relationship moments. She’s the first one to hear about the great new guy, to admire the ring, to give a speech at the engagement party, she’s the maid of honor and later on the one who gets to organize baby shower. Being best friend is a privilege, but at times it’s hard work, especially when you have to prepare a party for mom-to-be and you haven’t really been to one yet. Nothing to worry, putting together a baby shower is much easier than organizing a bachelorette party, you just need to stick to some general rules.

Since it’s a baby shower, stick to baby theme when decorating the place where you’re throwing the party. Just remember that you’re in a privileged situation and may know the baby’s sex even if other guests don’t, so don’t use typical boy or girl colors and instead opt for neutrals like green, yellow and always appropriate white. If it’s no secret whether it’s a boy or a girl, by all means go pink or blue, it will be a very nice gesture.

When it comes to food, a selection of cupcakes, cookies, tartlets and other sweets is always appropriate, and if you can get them decorated with some baby-themed items like mini pacifiers made of candy or chocolate baby bottles, the better. Baby showers are typically sweets-oriented, but don’t forget to add some savory snacks like spinach dip with fresh vegetables and mini pita bread sandwiches. As for drinks, stick to soft beverages and make sure there is a selection of non-caffeinated ones so the mom-to-be is not limited to just water.

To be sure everyone is on time, make sure the address, date and time printed on the invitations are right, and ask everybody to RSVP so that you’ll know when all the guests are present. You’ll need that information especially if you plan on some games, but they are not a necessity. For a small, close group of friends and family getting together ad having a chance to chat about the baby to come is fun in itself, so you don’t have to worry about entertaining them. Just play some quiet, pleasant music and make sure everybody feels comfortable to grab a bite to eat or a beverage.

Baby showers are a chance for the guests to meet with your friend before she gives birth, but it’s also the time to give her presents. As the hostess, make sure there is a place to put away the presents, and later on make notes who gifted what, so the new mom can send appropriate Thank You cards. Also make sure you have a trash bag ready for the wrapping paper, and a box for all the unpacked gifts to make it easy to carry out.

You are the future mom’s best friend, so instead of getting a typical baby gift like a toy or a selection of cutest onesies, or maybe in addition to one of those, it would be great if you got something for the mom herself. You can’t go wrong with an oversized, luxurious robe she’ll be able to take to the hospital, a box of different delicate bath salts or relaxation music she can play for herself and the baby. Just stay away from extravagant things like couture fashion, rock concert tickets or a weekend spa getaway, because it’s going to be quite some time before she’s ready for them.
