Each and every person with regular access to the Internet has, at one point or another, searched their own name, or that of their company, on Google, Yahoo, MSN, or some other search engine.

This search generally yields mostly, or all, good articles, websites, or social networking profiles. However, sometimes a casually curious search like this will yield the worst kind of results. A disgruntled employee, an angry neighbor, or a dissatisfied customer will often go onto the Internet and find a platform through which they can display their anger quickly and freely for everyone to see. Of course, once this bit of negative publicity is placed on the Internet by whomever creates it—it is visible to you, too, as well as the millions of other Internet users.

That means possible customers to your business could be lost, possible employers could Google you and have doubts, etcetera. Now obviously these people have every right to use the Internet as a medium for their thoughts and opinions, but it is not advantageous for you to have every person who searches your name, or company, to find his or her rantings.

The advantage of the Internet is that it provides a voice to everyone who can access it, but it's advantage is also its largest drawback. The cranks, misanthropes, and troublemakers can use the Internet in the same way, but for negative ends. This is why online reputation management exists, to aid in decreasing the visibility of these negative articles and sites.
