When we hear the term "Shangri-La", what usually comes up to mind is the popular hotel chains. However, in popular culture, the term is actually a synonym of immortality. It is said to be the place where the popular Fountain of Youth is located, which is the key to staying young forever.
In reality, however, we have yet to come up with a technology that makes immortality possible. At present, the closest one can get to Shangri-La is through medical spas.
But just what are these so-called spas, and why are they sprouting up like mushrooms all across the country?
A medical integrates the features of a medical clinic and a day spa with a medical license, where professional doctors treat patients. Medical spas offer a variety of services like cosmetic and plastic surgery, liposuction, and specialized services such as hydration therapy, hair removal and abdominoplasty.
The difference between these spas and medical centers is that the former has a more soothing and relaxing atmosphere, in contrast to the stark, clinical hallways and sterile odor of a hospital. In addition, medical spas offer a rounded wellness menu that can include specialties such as hydration therapy and HGC consultation. Some even offer relaxation services such as massage and relaxation treatments.
What differentiates medical spas from normal ones is that they are owned by state-licensed doctors. Each procedure is supervised by a specialist, be it a doctor or a specialized surgeon, assisted by a team of medical professionals. These can be nurses or nursing practitioners,estheticians or medical technicians.
At present, there is still no national standard for medical spas, therefore leaving the regulation and decision up to individual states. As a result, many people are confused as to who can perform medical procedures and what are the licenses and permit necessary.
For example, if a state has no rules or policies regarding laser and light treatments yet, this means that even technicians without medical training can perform them on patients. In fact, some medical spas across the country are staffed with non-med technicians who perform everything from Botox to laser liposuction.
What seems worse is that the law is not really crystal clear as to which treatments can be done by a licensed doctor and those that can be done by a non-medical technician. Having said that, it is of great importance that the clients first do dome background check regarding the credibility and efficiency of the medical spa, the staff, the facilities and even the services.
Vague regulations and sometimes the lack of them, make it hard to control and police unlicensed technicians who are working for medical spas. Add to that the lack of awareness of clients about treatments that should be operated only by licensed medical doctors and not merely by a non-medical technician.
Medical spas can indeed be a better option than the boring confines of a clinic or medical center. However, you need to make sure that you're going to the right spa with actual professionals. Your life and body is at stake. It is only necessary that you take the extra precautions needed.
