I was driving through a flooded neighborhood this weekend and was heartsick about the devastation and the lives ruined. People had this glazed look in their eyes like they didn’t know where to start or what to do next. I mentioned this to Peter Pamela Rose, and she went into Professional Life Coaching mode without pause. “What did I think they were afraid of?” she asked.

Around the world disasters are happening all the time. Hurricane Irene wreaked plenty of havoc on the east coast last week, and I was reminded of what Certified Life Coach, Peter Pamela Rose, tells those facing the most difficult of times: “We are never given more than we can handle, but we are always given more than we can control.” That seems harsh when thinking about people devastated by natural and man-made disasters. And yet, Peter is right. We worry about what could happen; we worry about what did happen. But “the only point of power is in the present moment,” states Peter. Right now, what we do and say in this moment will have way more impact on our lives than worrying about the future or the past. To relieve ourselves of disaster, we must remain in the moment. Focus on the present, on what needs to be done at this very minute.
I said I thought they were probably afraid of being homeless, of not being able to replace their home or their belongings. Another question, “Why would they be afraid of that?”I replied, “Because their whole lives have changed.” How quickly Peter got to the heart of it all, something she does daily with her life coaching and career coaching clients. What we are most afraid of is change, because when our lives change we don’t have control. That’s okay, Peter says. We may not have control over it, but we can handle it. The people in the neighborhood I was driving through had their lives changed, not ruined. Their possessions and property were ruined. And Peter offers one of her favorite sayings in paraphrase, “It’s not the smartest or strongest – it’s who can adapt to change that survives.”
When faced with disaster, relief comes from within. Yes, we accept help when needed, but we find the strength in the moment. We take the one step we are most afraid to take. And we handle a disastrous situation one step at a time. The lessons we learn will make us stronger and enable us to be of service to others, something Peter Pamela Rose believes is our purpose for being alive. “Being of service to others also takes focus off our problems and puts it on solving others’ problems,” suggests Peter. In telling ourselves “I can handle it” instead of “I have to get control of it” we are able to take care of ourselves first and then help others.
We have no way of knowing when disaster will strike. What we must come to know is that relief from disaster comes from the power we find in the present moment. We can’t give in to worry and feelings of being overwhelmed. We help ourselves in order that we may help others.
