What you can eat
Eat a low-protein diet. Proteins will produce a waste known as urea after liver breaks down protein. Urea needs to be filtered by kidneys, so low-protein diet can ease your kidneys from heavy burden. To achieve this goal, you need to eat less meat, cheese, and a little less of protein beans and legumes. Manage your diet full of fruits and vegetables.
Add fish oil to your diet. Fish oil is the rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids and you can get it from cold-water oily fish, including salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. Studied in lab animals show that fish oil has the property of anti-inflammation and slows the progression of PKD.
Manage a low-salt meal. Try to use garlic powder, onion power or other herbs and spices replacing salt. You’d better limit the intake of sauces, such as ketchup and soy sauce. Avoid frozen food and processed food, for most of them contain more salt the others.

Steer clear of foods high in oxalic acid. Oxalic acid is a chemical compound found in certain vegetables. The body has no known use for it and when the kidneys and liver are functioning well they flush it out of your system with no problem. Foods high in oxalic acid include beets, eggplants, cocoa, beets, spinach, rhubarb etc.
Limit animal proteins. Limit animal products to occasional broths, poultry, fish, low-fat cheese and egg whites, keeping quantities to 3 oz. per day or less.
Reduce alcohol. Even though proper intake of alcohol is not bad for health people, alcohol should be limited or avoided for patients with PKD. You’d better take spritzers of xaranbery, grape, apple as a replacement.
We suggest patients with PKD take measures in diet management early. If you suspect yourself with PKD gene, but you have no symptoms yet, you’d better to begin a well managed diet anyway.
