Diet for Diarrhea

The good news is that diarrhea can be prevented and controlled. Diet plays a key factor. And while specific causes may have specific treatments, there are things you can do to help prevent general occurrences. Experts suggest staying away from diarrhea medication as the purpose of the disease is to help your body get rid of the bacteria and viruses. What you can do is to stick to a diet and wait it out as uncomfortable as it may be.

Keep yourself hydrated at all times. Drink fluids like juice, electrolyte solutions and water. Stay away from alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Consume yoghurt or curd. These contain probiotics that can ease some of the parasites symptoms and make you feel better.

Treatment for Diarrhea

When to seek emergency treatment depends on several factors. If yours lasts for over three days, get yourself checked. Dizziness, weakness and muscle cramps are symptoms of dehydration so you’ll need to consult a doctor. Stools that are bloody, oily or black could signify something else too. High fever along with diarrhea in children as well as adults also needs to be addressed. When it comes to children, you need to take things a little more seriously. Kids under 3 months who vomit or have diarrhea frequently need to get treated. So do children older than 3 months who vomit continuously for 12 hours or more.

For diarrhea treatment or prevention when traveling, the specifications are different. Drink only boiled water and use that for brushing your teeth too. Don’t eat roadside foods and stuff that’s served cold. Don’t eat raw products like fish, shellfish and rare meat. As for fruits and veggies, eat them raw only if they can be peeled.

By keeping these tips in mind, you should be able to better control and treat bouts of diarrhea. When things take a turn for the worse or when a cure doesn’t seem to be close, visit a doctor who can diagnose the cause and provide treatment accordingly.
