Developing Study Skills to Get Better Grades

Developing strong study skills can is one of the most effective ways to improve test scores and performance in any academic subject.
Studying is one of the most difficult things for a person to do. It is not that most people dislike studying. It is the fact that most people are not sure exactly how to study so they might feel like they are not getting a lot out of it. If this happens, you will be more likely to get bad grades and you may quit studying altogether.

Luckily, there is help. Studying does not have to be a chore and it can actually be quite fun. Today you will learn a few things that will help make studying a lot easier. Before you know it, you will have the study skills you need and the grades you always wanted.

Your Environment Plays a Role in How Well You Study

The first tip is to make sure you are in the right environment. While most people think that studying in your room is a great place to go, this is actually one of the worst things you can do. Your room more than likely has a bed in it. If you become bored or a little sleepy, you will see the bed over to the side and you will most likely want to take a nap.

If you can fight off the urge to sleep, you then have to worry about other distractions in your room. More than likely you probably have a computer or a TV in there. This will make it hard to focus and you will be more likely to put studying off until later because you will keep surfing the internet or you will find other TV shows you want to watch.

If possible, study in a home office or den. Even better, pick up your books and backpack and head to the library. Your mind already has it programmed in that a library is a place to study and read. There are not a lot of distractions at a library and you will see a lot more success if you go there.

Determine the Best Time of Day to Study

The next tip is to set aside a certain time each day that you can study. If you do this, you will get into a routine and you will start treating your studying as part of your schedule. When the time comes around each day, you will know that it is time to start studying. Almost like if you had a job and you had to punch in your time card to be paid for your hours.

Your routine will start to reward you for better test scores and completed homework. It might take a week or two to get into the habit, but if you can fight the temptation, you will quickly see the results of your discipline.

Break Your Study Session into Smaller Parts

Make sure you take a break every hour or so. Research has shown that we can only focus for an hour or two (depending on the person) before we cannot concentrate any more. This is why it is important to set aside breaks to get up and move around or go get a drink of water.

You want to do everything you can to keep yourself refreshed. Once your break is up, you can set your timer for another hour or so before you get a break. This will also make it so you can have intense focus and concentration in a short period instead of long marathon with a lot of interruption.

Research has also shown that it can take up to 20 minutes to focus again after being interrupted. You want to work in an area free of interruption, because each time you stop will prolong the amount of time it will take you to study. Working in a quiet area allows you to get down to studying as quickly as possible.

While these are not all of the study skills you need to be successful, they are a great start as to what you need to better prepare yourself as a student. If you can follow these study skills, you will start seeing more success in the classroom right away.
