If you are planning to purchase a new computer at any point in the near future, then you will have to choose between a laptop and a desktop model. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type, and the intended use of the computer will have a large bearing on your choice. In the event that you will be leaving the in one location, then a desktop model might be a better option, but if you need or desire portability, you might need to go for a laptop.

In many ways, desktop computers are superior to laptops. For starters, you can construct a PC at home fairly easily for next to nothing, and even the pre built models are a lot cheaper than laptops of similar specifications. They can be customised and expanded a lot more easily. You can have any size of display you want, and they are usually a lot more comfortable to work at than laptops. Thanks to their greater room, better ventilation, and bigger power supplies, they can support much more powerful processors, faster hard drives, and more memory than laptops, so if you want to have a really powerful machine for gaming, graphics work, or music production, then a desktop is really your only option. In general, desktops are a lot more durable, and are a lot easier to fix if anything goes wrong.

Desktops do have some drawbacks when compared to laptops, though. For instance, you have to plug them into the mains, and if the power supply is cut for any reason, even if only for a moment, then they are turned off, which can cause in data loss and errors. Uninterruptable powers supplies are available, but are surprisingly expensive. Most desktop computers are not really, and moving them involves unplugging and plugging all the peripherals such as the monitor, mouse, and keyboard. There are more portable versions of the desktop computer, such as small form factor models and all in one units with wireless control devices, but these tend to offer less expandability than larger models, and are usually more expensive.
