Dentistry implants are considered to be the best option for people who have lost one, two, or all of their permanent teeth. Dentistry implants are used by people of all ages, except for small children, to replace their missing teeth. Some of the most common dentistry implant patients are:
• Lost teeth to an accident. There are some cases wherein people have lost their teeth due to accidents wherein their teeth have been hit bad and have fallen out. People sometimes lose just one or two teeth during accidents, but in worse cases, all their teeth need to be replaced.
• Gum disease and tooth decay. One of the most common causes for patients getting dentistry implants is tooth decay and gum disease. Without proper care and hygiene, teeth can deteriorate, weaken, and eventually fall out. Majority of patients who have gum disease or tooth decay have successfully recovered after undergoing treatment using dentistry implants.
• Patients who use bridges and dentures. Most of the time, people who have been using dentures for quite a long time eventually decide to get implants. Dentistry implants are more permanent compared to dentures. They are also implanted to the jawbone in such a way that they don’t wobble or fall out while eating or talking.
Small children are not advised to get implants, not until their jaw growth is complete. But there are some cases wherein the child will need an implant especially when the doctor will say that the implant is part of an orthodontic treatment plan. Children are more vulnerable when it comes to using implants, which is why it is very important to choose an orthodontist for your child who has done implants for younger children.
Requirements before undergoing the procedure
All patients will still undergo an assessment as to whether they are a perfect candidate for dentistry implants. Not just anyone can have implants. Some doctors would still recommend using dentures instead of implants. It all depends on the need and situation of the patient.
Here are some of the qualities that a dentistry patient should have before undergoing the procedure:
• Strong bones. One of the first requirements when getting implants are strong bones. Dentistry implants are embedded into the jawbone, and the bone is given a maximum of 6 months to heal. The healing period is done to ensure that the implant does not wobble and is one of the reasons why this treatment is considered an almost permanent tooth replacement procedure.
• Healthy gums. After the surgery, it’s not only the bones which need healing, but the gums as well. Healthy gums means that there is no constant bleeding and they heal perfectly well after the implants have been embedded.
• Good health. As always before going into any type of surgery, the patient has to be in tip-top shape. Patients who have leukemia or diabetes may think first before getting treatment. Diabetes or leukemia can interfere with the proper healing of the bones and gums.
