However, the underlying theme in defining gay-friendly is that being gay-friendly centers on welcoming and equality for everyone, regardless of one’s sexual orientation. In addition, being gay-friendly includes possessing an awareness of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues and a willingness to learn about what it is like to live as a part of the LGBT community or to share in the life of someone who is. In a broader sense, being gay- friendly advances community as a whole, allowing for and celebrating individual differences, to create a world that is rich in its diversity. The new decade provides a definition of gay-friendly as a philosophy and lifestyle where everyone is welcomed regardless of their sexual orientation. To that end this article will feature several gay-friendly sources that promote inclusiveness and understanding. Safe Zone Safe Zone is a program that is being increasingly established in colleges and universities throughout the country. It provides campuses with a visible network that supports the LGBT community. Members of a Safe Zone receive a “Safe Zone Sticker” that designates them as someone empathetic to and knowledgeable of issues facing those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Because understanding is such an important part their work, Safe Zone members also educate people about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. The Gay-Friendly Source The Gay-Friendly Source, gayfriendlysource.com, is a website designed to be used by everyone - gay or straight, and by nearly all ages, from teens to grandparents. The term “gay,” is used throughout the site in its inclusive sense, referring to the entire LGBT community. The Gay-Friendly Source differs from other gay-friendly websites in that it is intended to be used by everyone. The site offers news and other items of interest to those who are gay and to those who are not and provides a (directory) of gay-friendly events, including the arts, community events, and networking opportunities. The site offers an extensive directory of gay-friendly businesses, organizations, professionals and non-profits to assist in finding businesses and organizations that espouse the philosophy of being gay-friendly and conduct their businesses in that way. The Gay-Friendly Source is a comprehensive resource, national in scope, intended to increase awareness of gay issues and to encourage inclusiveness and welcoming for all. In considering the definition of “gay-friendly,” providing awareness and resources are key components towards making the world an increasingly more gay-friendly place. Awareness and knowledge lead to understanding, which leads to empathy.
