Tapestries are ancient forms of wall decorations used since the 1st century BC. They are often made in wool, linen, silk and cotton. If you plan to decorate your home with this kind of artwork, you can choose from a variety of styles from Asian, African, Middle Eastern to European tapestries. You have to pick the ones that look suitable for your general design theme.

If your interior decor is Asian themed, then your best option would be an Asian tapestry. If your house looks elegant, then maybe a European tapestry would look more suitable. African versions can look great in a casual and colorful interior design. Middle Eastern kinds are quite expensive if they are authentic or made of silk.

Before buying a gorgeous looking tapestry, you also have to make sure the size is appropriate for your wall. Make sure that it is neither too small nor too large. Create a balance and consider other aspects in the room aside from your wall size such as furniture that will be placed next to the tapestry. Another factor is color. These kinds of wall decor can also come in a variety of colors that can match other things in your room.

Once you already have your tapestry, you can plan on how to hang it. Unlike canvas wall art or paintings, tapestries are bit more complicated to hang. You will need additional materials to hang them on your wall such as tapestry hanger nails, a wooden or metal rod, screws, brackets and maybe some Velcro. Decide where you want to hang your tapestry.

Typically, they can be hung over a bed, in the stairway, or above a fireplace. European tapestries are often hung in elegant living rooms. Visualize how your tapestry will look above a couch or bed. It should not hang too high or too low that it touches or gets covered by furniture below it. If possible hang a tapestry within eye level to give viewers the best view.

Hanging your tapestry within eye level lets you see the finer details like the texture and weave. Check the back of the tapestry to see if it already comes with hanging hardware. It will help to ask for them when you purchase it from the store. It might come with a couple of hooks in the back. If it does not come ready to hang, you will have to do some handy work yourself.

If your tapestry comes with hooks, you can hammer nails into your wall at the same distance of the hooks behind the tapestry. Measure the space between the hooks at the back of the tapestry and then use that measurement when placing nails on the wall. You can simply attach the hooks on your tapestry to the nails on the wall.

You can also attach European tapestries to a rod. Install brackets to the wall where you can place rod similar to how you would hang curtains. Hang the rod on the brackets like you would a curtain. Step back and examine the tapestry to make sure it is evenly hung. You can use Velcro to enhance the stability of the artwork.
