In previous few articles we have discussed about fractions and how to solve them. Today, we will learn few more things about fractions and decimal. Decimal is a way in which we can represent fraction or we can say that fraction is a way used to express decimal. What do you understand by ‘decimal’? It is nothing but a single point (.) when we point this in between any number then the number is in decimal form. The decimal number system is also known as base ten systems or denary system, and it has ten as its base. Decimals sometimes refer to decimal fractions, either separately or in constant to fractions. A decimal is the tenth part, and it becomes a series of nested tenths.

You all are familiar with the whole numbers, it is formed by zero and the counting numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5…) and every number is not a whole number. In decimal system we write numbers of all sizes and types, using a clever symbol (.) called as decimal point. In decimal number when we move right from the decimal point, each value is divided by 10 or multiple of 10.

Example 123.678 is a decimal number and when we move right from decimal point all each numbered divided by 10 or multiple of 10.

If you want to write this number in fraction then we can simply write it. In this there is three numbers when we move right from the decimal point, so, we can divide the number by 1000 and remove its decimal point.

123. 678= 123678/1000. You can also simplify it then it would be a simplified fraction.

The decimal may present in any number, it may be present in numerator or in denominator or in both. Example- 12.5/ 1.2 it is also a decimal number. And many other such types of numbers. In short to remember decimal you have to remember that a point in between number is present. One important thing about decimal is that if a number having zero or zeros after decimal point then the zero is not considered. For example: 12.00, this simply means 12, we will not consider zero. If a number like 12.50 is there then we consider the 5 after point and apply previous rule with zero.
