When your feet are giving up on you, and vice versa, it might be time to consider the shoe worn by professionals the world over: the famous Dansko Danish clog.
Since Dansko was founded in 1990, the company has expanded its line far beyond its flagship shoe, the Stapled Clog. It now manufactures sandals, boots, flats, heels and clogs galore. But like the original Stapled Clog, all shoes and boots made by Dansko offer the same all-day comfort found in the original footwear. The company has also introduced even more levels of comfort, using ultra-soft materials, suede linings and cushioned insoles.
The shoe company was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Mandy Cabot and Peter Kjellerup. They were horse trainers who discovered a great barn shoe back in Peter’s home country of Denmark. Thinking they were onto something great, the two entrepreneurs spent a couple years testing their shoe model and came up with clogs that are extremely comfortable, virtually indestructible and yet still attractive.
They named their fledgling shoe company Dansko, which translates to “Danish shoe.” Mandy and Peter got the rights to manufacture a line of stapled clogs and started their business. Today, Dansko footwear is available for men and women, and is sold in more than 3,500 retail locations.
Dansko’s philosophy is “beautiful from the inside out.” The shoes look good and they keep your feet in good shape. The Stapled Clog was designed to be comfortable and still offer maximum support. Its upper is made from high-quality leather that is molded to follow the natural contour of your foot.
Its Permair Protector leather makes it easy to clean the clogs and is so sturdy it meets the European Union’s standards for safety footwear. Eight of the Dansko collections are now endorsed by and carry the seal of approval of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Those lines are the Stapled, Sausalito, Louvre, Capri, Golden Gate, Left Bank and Cambridge and men’s Next Gen.
The shoe has a nonallergenic, antimicrobial lining that can absorb and evaporate perspiration. And its outsole is made of polyurethane that protects your back, legs and feet when you have to stand or walk for long hours. The outsoles are also slip resistant for the workplace. The shoes are also resistant to the cold, salt, grit and many chemicals. They are also resistant to viral and blood borne pathogens and body fluids that workers might encounter in the healthcare or other industry.
The shoes also feature an anatomically correct arch support, rocker soles and elevated heels that ease leg and back muscles. They have a high toe box and generous width to promote blood circulation and comfort.
Women’s Dansko shoes come in a variety of styles, starting with its bread-and-butter model, the clog. The classic black tooled clog runs about $120. It is available in sizes 5 ½ to 12, medium width. For the same shoe, but with a wilder look, consider the brown, leopard patent leather model. It also retails for $120. There’s a less-dressy, oiled leather clog that’s price at $115.
For a totally different look, consider the scalloped lotus leaf pattern closed-toe shoe. It has a 1¾-inch heal and an adjustable buckle backstrap. The Veg-tan model is made of glove-soft leather. It’s lightweight and still offers the same great ergonomic outsole.
Women can also find boots made by Dansko. The Delilah, a Chocolate Leather/Nubuck model comes in a 2¾-inch heal with a soft leather upper. A zipper helps ensure a snug fit. It has a fully padded insole that evens the distribution of weight and relieves pressure on the ball of the foot. It retails for about $185.
Dansko also makes a wide variety of clogs, shoes and boots for men in many of the same finishes as those used in the women’s clogs. The men’s footwear comes in sizes 8½ to 15. The price is also comparable to the women’s line. For example, a basic Dansko professional clog in black leather for men retails for about $115.
In addition to the clogs, Dansko also makes a line of boots for men. The Sutton boot is a shoe boot made of black or brown, full-grain leather. It has a three-rivet tie front and the same ergonomically correct outsole. It sells for about $140.
For more of a hiking, all-terrain type boot, consider the brown, oiled leather Tanner Boot. The leather upper has a six-rivet lace and a rubber, slip resistant outer sole. It has the standard Dri-Lex sock lining and sells for about $140. The Tyler Boot is similar to the Tanner model, but does not rise as high, with just four rivets for lacing.
So the next time your feet are telling you that they need a more comfortable shoe, remember Dansko. Not only will your feet feel better, but so will your legs and back.
