Dam grouting is an integral part of dam repair and construction. Dam grouting techniques have had considerable value as remedial tools in dam construction. In recent years, there have been significant advances in materials and grouting techniques as a remedial tool in various applications such as seepage and settlement control as well as seismic mitigation. Specialized tools are used in dam repair. One of the most important tools in dam repair is the grout pump. Various grouting techniques have been developed including cement, chemical, and compaction grouting among others.

Permeation Grouting

This refers to the process of injecting grout substance in an isolated space with undefined space configuration. The space could be a large void in the dam foundation or a number of micro-voids between soil particles.

The main objective of permeation grouting is to improve soil structure on which the dam is built. There are other specific reasons for permeation grouting including strengthening soil structure around a dam or reducing water flow through the ground. However, permeation grouting is typically used to correct improperly compacted soils. The needs of a dam repair project define the intricacies of the procedure.

Cement Grouting

This refers to the injection of pumpable cement into rock and soil foundations to change the physical structure of the dam foundation. A grout pump is used during the injection. Cement grouting is undertaken to fill voids or fractures in the dam foundation. It improves the stability of rock foundations, provides pre-construction site improvements, stops rock slabbing, rectifies sinkhole problems, repairs fractures in dam foundations, controls soft-ground settlements and arrests foundation settlement.

Chemical Grouting

In this process, chemical grout is introduced into soils to create stone like masses that strengthen the dam foundation and walls. The chemical is mixed with sand, granules or gravel and introduced into the soil structure completely filling voids and controlling water flow. This technique is mostly used in subterranean structures that are leaking. It improves the rigidity and strength of the soil. It also minimizes ground movement during construction.

Compaction Grouting

This is almost the same as chemical grouting. However, in this procedure, pumpable grout is injected at high pressure in specific areas of the soil. The grout then expands, compacting the soil around each discharge point. This process is generally done in stages working from the bottom up. Top down injections are often done on shallow dams because the technique strengthens the upper soil layer, which contains the pressure of lower level compaction. This method is used to rectify sinkhole problems and arrest foundation settlements.

Cellular Grouting

This is the injection of engineered cement slurry with density-controlled foam. The mixture of engineered slurry and foam produces a lightweight product with equally distributed air cells. This dam repair technique is becoming increasingly acceptable within the engineering and construction industry as an effective method of filling voids.

Void Fill Grouting

This technique is the ideal repair method for dams with collapsed voids, sinkhole or depression forms that produce ground or surface deformation. Gradual deterioration of a void can lead to significant damage on buildings, roads and utilities. Voids develop as a result of various conditions. For instance, rubbish or trash buried during a dam construction will create a void as the pile decomposes. Breakage of sanitary and storm sewer pipes allows fill materials to be carried off leading to the development of underground voids. Void fill grouting can fill all voids preventing damage to structures and utilities.

When picking a dam repair company, choose one with years of experience and a record of accomplishment. Remember when it comes to grouting, there are no second chances. Therefore it is important to do it right the first time.
