Most people that surf the web would never guess that there is a certain amount of complexity that lies within the processing of web pages. An organization that is well organized realizes that there are major benefits of DNS services. This system of domain name systems is enhanced even more through the use of DNS load balancing.
The concept of load balancing involves the spreading of requests across multiple servers. This is important because networks that are large in size can easily receive lots of requests for translations of the domain names during the course of the day. All the requests can easily tie down a single server and even cause the equipment to crash.
The better course of action for a network would be to distribute the request over multiple server connections. DNS load balancing can be configured by having the DNS functionality to give several different addresses to one system name. This is the most common method and one of the most efficient ways to keep a balance between the number of hits that may occur during the same time .
There are several known methods, but the most networks reap the benefits of a concept called Robin Round DNS. With the technique the load distribution of responses is managed by the use of a statistical model. This type of load balancing is more common in the Wide Area Networks where the geographical distance plays a major part in the network setup. This form of load management is beneficial for the WAN because an organization may use redundancy across a large area. Several servers may be set up to mirror each other and respond to the same domain name. In binary form, however, the servers would all have different IP addresses. Round Robin responds to this perfectly by addressing the requests from a list of IP addresses.
DNS load balancing systems can also be built using BIND. This concept, also known as the Berkeley Internet Name Daemon, is an implementation of DNS protocols. Additional methods include sever-side and rating demon algorithms. All of these models provide different ways to distribute the load that can become extremely busy for network administrators. These methods should all be explored and utilized in accordance to network designs and organization needs. The best load balancing practices are a product of trial and error.
