Cuttack is almost an island, situated at the head of the Mahanadi delta and surrounded by Mahanadi river and its collateral, the Kathjuri. Due to its historical importance and the recent commercialization, Cuttack has emerged as a favoured tourist destination. Cuttack is one of Orissa's oldest cities (Abhinaba Baranasi Kataka of medieval times). The legendary engineering skills of the ancient Orissans are not only featured in their wonderful temples but also can be seen in the 11th century AD stone embankments on the Kathjori river. Cuttack achieved its significance as an important trade centre in 1750 under the Marathas rule and became a business hub for trade between the Marathas of Nagpur and the English Merchants of Bengal. Under the British rule, Cuttack became the capital of Orissa in 1816 and later on came to be the administrative headquarters of Orissa when the capital was shifted to Bhubaneshwar in 1948. The ruins of the Barabati fort, on the bank of the Mahanadi, evoke memories of bygone days, while the fort's location is home to a modern stadium which rings with the sounds of sports events and cultural programmes today. Like all other major cities of the subcontinent, cultural life of Cuttack is marked with colourful festivals and fiestas. Apart from the usual celebrations of Dusshera of a typical Indian city, Cuttack show cases a unique festival of its own by name Baliyatra, which commemorates the ancient trade links of the city with Java, Bali and Sumatra. Being the commercial capital of the state, Cuttack is well connected with the rest of the country through air, rail and road. Bhubaneswar is the nearest airport that connects Cuttack with major cities in India through air.

Some of the prominent amongst them are: Barabati Fort, Quadam-I- Rasool Cuttack, Stone Revetments, Chandi Temple, Dhavaleshwar, Sri Radhagobinba Jew Temple etc. The holy places at Cuttack is what draws the largest number of tourist from India and abroad.

Barabati Fort: Build in 14th century by Ganga Dynasty, it is situated just 8 km from the city center. Barabati Fort is the most famous tourist destination in Cuttack. During the time of war, the nine storeyed Barabati Fort was defended by a ring of forts on either sides of the river. Today, there is an international stadium right adjacent to the fort.
The Stone Revetments: The Stone Revetment, situated on the banks of river Mahanadi, is a fabulous piece of engineering works. One can only feel the height of engineering developments of Orissa during the 11th century.
Dhavaleswar: It is 37 km by road from Cuttack and 4 km through water. A small but beautiful island in Mahanadi, Dhavaleswar enchants all with the spell of the river. The Shiva Temple, perched on a hillock, is approachable by flights of steps, one from the north and other one from the south. As a religious centre, Dhavaleswar throngs with religious activities throughout the year.

Road: Cuttack is well connected with Bhubaneshwar, Konark, Puri, Kolkata and rest of India by road.
Rail: Cuttack has its own railhead and is well connected to all metro cities and other major cities of India. From cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, there are regular to and fro trains.
Air: The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik Airport at Bhuvneshwar, which is 29 km away. It the capital of Orissa so it is an important airport.
