I’m going to be completely honest with you, dear readers. I am quite the massive nerd, and have recently been partaking in one of my favourite nerdy pastimes, Online Video Gaming. Now before you all cry foul and berate my poor hobby I think you should take a second to find out more about it. If you watch the news you’d be forgiven for thinking that video games are some sort of psychopathic murderer training simulators, but this simply isn’t any more true than it was when television was first announced to be warping the minds of the young sometime in the fifties and sixties. In fact, video gaming can be comparable to television in many ways, but the one that stands out in particular is the competitive element for its participants.

Recently there has been a recent international video gaming tournament held in Sweden called Dreamhack in which competitors have travelled to play in this tournament, for many different games, and its truly interesting to see how far into the entertainment realm gaming has reached. Not only are there prize pools of around $100,000 available, but there’s also a small fortune to be made for the events through sponsorship. This can range from the signs in the background, or the matching uniforms on the team of competitors, right down to the little things like customisable mouse mats. This got me to thinking about what kind of application a customisable computer kit could have outside of the televised gaming events. While getting a specific uniform would be a little much for your computing needs either in the office or a home, one could easily get themselves a couple of personalised stickers to place on their machine, or like I mentioned earlier, get a customised mouse mat that shows off something about your interests, or a certain style that matches your surroundings or machine style. Its often a very nice cosmetic touch and can really dress your computer up a bit. And when you consider how easy it is to get a customisable stickers or mouse mats and how cheap they are compared to getting anew case or lid for a laptop, then it just makes sense to get one.

Many people will be thinking, as far as computer customisation goes anyway, about the presentation, rather than the overall performance, because at this state of technologies lifespan, many of the top end computers will have reached the height of performance. Because often intensive use of graphics on screen can be one of the main reasons for a high performance computer, and because graphics aren’t going to get much better or intensive than what they already are, it seems the jump from power to presentation makes sense. This is made especially true by the concept of image and how people more and more tend to care about how they are perceived by others around them, and so to that, I say, you can’t get better value for money than something as simple as a customisable mouse mat.
