The TechCrunch50 conference recently started and for 50 new start-up companies, the two-day event is a make-or-break occasion. This annual conference is a venue within which companies get a chance to showcase their products and services in front of a panel of experts and get feedback on whether or not investors will be willing to take a chance on the innovations presented.
Products and services featured at the event included gaming and educational applications, hardware, business applications and Internet advertising platforms. Many of the companies that presented are promising but naturally there were clear favorites among the panel members.
Geared for Young Ones
Some of the most promising products presented at the conference belong to the educational category with ToonsTunes and Story Something getting a warm reception from the judges. ToonsTunes aims to encourage and teach children to create music in a virtual studio called the Mix-O-Matic. Users can choose from numerous tracks and even add their own vocals. There are virtual concert venues that their avatars can perform their music in.
Story Something is a service that should not only appeal greatly to children but to parents as well. Story Something creates personalized bedtime stories that can parents can read to their children. The star of the story, of course, assumes the name of the child and parents can choose from a variety of themes based on their child’s interests. The stories are e-mailed to the parents who can read it over the Internet but this application is also available on the Apple iPhone.
Business
There were also a lot of applications geared towards business users that were launched at the conference. Citysourced is a mobile civic engagement tool and it seems to show a lot of potential although it is only currently available for the Apple iPhone. With Citysourced, people can take pictures of urban problems such as uncollected garbage, potholes and so on and upload it to the Citysourced website. The complaints will then be directed to city hall where the problems can be resolved.
Clientshow is a collaborative application designed to allow people in the design profession to share their work with their clients. It also functions as a platform in which designers can obtain approval for a particular project. Users can upload work, have others on their team leave comments and even do a presentation of a project to the clients. Collaborations may be printed out and the entire history of exchanges may be included.
Hardware
Many of the hardware products launched at this year’s TechCrunch50 are also marketed toward the youth sector. Spawn Labs is a gaming console that enables users to play video games from a network connected computer. The advantages of this type of product are varied. For instance, if the TV is being used by someone else, users can simply plug the device onto a computer via the USB port and play away.
You can also take advantage of the Spawn Labs console even when you are travelling, as long as there’s an available broadband connection. Another product, ToyBots, allows users to download personalities for their toys through an online network.
