Although, cricket is not a national sport of India, but it is the most popular game among the Indians. Today, every child wants to follow the footprints of great Indian cricketing legends and someone from somewhere sprouts out to become the next cricketer of India.
Cricket as a sport date backs during the arrival of East India Company, when the first Britishers played the gentleman's sport in India. Certain records suggest that the sport was first seen and played at Cambay, near Baroda when the English sailors first landed on 1721 in the country. It is said that "the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club" came to live by 1792 while another club was formed at Seringapatam in south India after the defeat of Tipu Sultan. But it was until 1864, when Calcutta and Madras played the first-class match in India. Similarly, George Vernon was the first Englishman to lead the English side. It was in the year 1889-90 when the English Capitan toured India and played some of the memorable matches but unfortunately the series are not taken into account as the first –class. Since then, cricket as become the most popular game of the country while a large number of diehard fans can be seen within the country. The sport has maintained its pride and saw the ups and downs in recent time while many cricketing legends became the real icons for the youngsters.

Polly Umrigar, became an instant legend when he scored the first ever test double against the visiting team New Zealand in Hyderabad. He became the first Indian to achieve the feat until the arrival of the second legend. Today, the cricketing governing body the BCCI has issued a trophy to honor the legend. There are other iconic legends that have been honored by the governing committee and became great inspiration for millions. This was seen by the world when India for the first time won the World Cup in 1983, defeating the invincible team, West Indies. The team was captained by "Kapil Dev" and made a sensational headline instantly. But it was the arrival of 2011 when the Indian cricket team managed to pull for the second time by winning the World Cup against the Lankans in India; it was a 28 years wait since their first win. The historical match was a sensational and was aired in many South Asian Channels for days. Similarly, the Indian teams have won certain iconic matches and introduced the "The Indian Premier League".

Today, many Desi TV providers have taken the initiative to air live cricketing match for the Indian fans. Unlike Soccer in London, Cricket is well appreciated and played not only on the cricketing ground but also played in the vicinities and alleys by kids and the youngsters of India. At the end one must not forget that it was the arrival of “The East India Company” that introduced the gentleman’s sport in India.
