The mantra “think out of the box” is commonly heard by students in school. Yet, even as schools encourage creative thinking, it seems so difficult for the majority of them to stretch their minds. What exactly is creative thinking? Creative or innovative thinking is the kind of thinking that leads to new insights, novel approaches, fresh perspectives, and new ways of understanding and conceiving things.
Besides devising creative solutions to complex questions in class, students also face the challenge of using creative notions to grasp abstract concepts.
Regardless of how rigid or objective the subject is, there is bound to be room for creative thinking. When students attend Maths tuition or Physics tuition, they are bombarded with the various formulae. Yet, the same old fixed formulae can be applied to hundreds of different questions. This gives students the opportunity to think creatively as to which formula to use when solving different questions.
For subjects that require the flair of language or creativity, such as literature, poetry, drama, music and art, creative thinking is probably the most crucial skill needed to master the subjects. Even in science, where nearly everything is factual, the acquirement of the creative thinking skill is extremely valuable. This is because scientists and engineers need to think innovatively in order to develop new inventions, such as new medicine and the myriad of technological gadgets that dominate our markets today.
Here are more convincing reasons to think creatively in school.
1) Enhancing current knowledge
Everyone learns more or less the same thing in school. Creative thinking skills can assist students in enhancing their knowledge base, placing them a notch above their peers. Without creative thinking, they are limited to knowledge as it is given.
2) Improving mental health
Students who are able to incorporate creativity into their lives can learn and utilize their academic talents more successfully. By doing so, they are able to manage their time effectively and cope with emotional stress in school. This improves their mental health and allows them to excel in their studies.
3) Leadership skills
Everyone is entitled to be a leader. As more schools encourage group project work, it is essential that individuals internalize the principles of creative problem solving, so that they can tackle difficulties and help their team members. This allows them to be recognised as a leader and not just a follower.
Indeed, creative thinking in schools has its benefits in creating a more effective learning experience. More importantly, students need to recognise the importance of it in their lives.
