Why not introduce your kids to cross stitching as a craft activity? Cross stitching has every appeal that children understand, from vibrant colors to fun designs. Cross stitch kits for children must be used under adult supervision because they contain small bits and pieces, but this is in a way an advantage since you get to spend time with your kids in the process.

The ideal stitching kit comes with 14 count Aida cloth, which means that there are 14 holes per linear inch. For an adult beginner, this may seem okay because the holes are visible, but for a child, the best option is to get a kit with a lesser count, like 7 or 10. Also remember that the cloth shrinks after washing, so even with a smaller count, the design will look better after washing.

Choose easy, durable thread for your kids to use, and as mentioned above, select vibrant colors to match the design you have in mind. A good way of ensuring this is by taking the kids to the cross stitch craft store or section, and having them select the designs they want, and then choosing thread accordingly.

You can have lots of fun teaching them how to thread a needle, which should be a bit wider than the usual needle size. This will be easier to grip in the child’s hand, and the end will be more or less safer to use because it doesn’t prick easily. You must teach your child the basics in handling needles especially the direction to pull the needle, which is away from the face not towards it. The Aida thread again should have bigger holes to accommodate the bigger needle.

As for patterns for kids’ projects, cross stitching charts for children have the basic geometric shapes like squares, triangles and circles, or even a house, car or bus for more detailed stitching. Know what your child can handle in terms of patterns and cross stitch abilities and choose a design to suit them.

Remember that the point of cross stitching with your kids is to have tons of fun and share quality time, and this should be more important than learning the exact technique or getting the details of the pattern perfectly. Work with your child and display their finished cross stitch designs to boost their confidence in their abilities.
