When there is a stabbing pain in the ribs, it is not always due of an injury. Instead, you may be suffering from a condition known as costochondritis, which is an irritation of the cartilage that connects the rib and the chest plate or sternum. Sadly, there are no definitive tests or imaging studies for costochondritis diagnosis. The only way for your doctor to know that you are experiencing costochondritis and not some other condition is through physical examination and taking your medical history. Costochondritis is often called chest wall pain. Children and adolescents usually experience this condition. It is a condition that causes 10%-30% of chest pain in children, and peaks at the age of 12-14.

Also known as chest wall pain, costochondritis syndrome can mimic the symptoms of other heart conditions such as a heart attack. If you are experiencing chest wall pain, do not spend so much time deliberating the difference between a heart attack and pain felt in chostochondritis. Cartilage is the soft material connecting your breastbone to your ribs. It allows your ribcage to be flexible and somewhat shock-absorbent. When this cartilage is damaged, it will feel like a rib injury. Cartilage damage in your chest will cause pain when you're breathing, laughing or coughing. One reason people don't understand why their ribs are in pain is because they don't know that ribs form a joint where they attach to the spine as well as to the sternum in front. Most often, the pain people experience in their ribs has to do with a misalignment of one or more of these rib joints.

In some cases, the ribs can become cracked due to pressure that is placed on them by lifting something too heavy. Doing the same motion over and over can also be a factor. Osteochondritis dissecans is caused by force or injury to the end of the bone. When it happens to a rib the rib, it occurs where the rib attaches to the spine or sternum. Generally speaking, it doesn't often occur because of a single incident: it is more likely to occur after repeated blows to the same area. Causes of back rib pain are mainly poor sitting positions while working for long hours without a change in the daily routine. This is because so much pressure is exerted on the vertebrae around the ribs which will bring about pain in the ribs on the back. While a cracked rib is considered to be the same as a broken one, when the break splits the bone in half, it can pose a serious danger. Sharp edges of bone can move around and damage nearby internal organs and tissues.

Sleeping becomes a real challenge. So does sitting down, standing up, or twisting your upper body. Taking a deep breath can be painful. Normal exhaling and inhaling can also cause discomfort. Just touching the area near a broken rib can also hurt a lot. It is important that you go to the hospital or doctor to have a definitive costochondritis diagnosis for chest pain is always considered an emergency. Once you are diagnosed, pain medications such as NSAID's can help lessen the pain.
