If the generation of Cola war and the Afghan war is over, today's generation is warring against the elements for a reversal of age. The derma-wars are on and cosmetic tattooing (or permanent make up) is the "in" thing.

Cosmetic Tattooing: Behind The Razzle Dazzle

Permanent make up is done by cosmetic dermatologists who can create permanent pigmentation of the dermis (outermost layer of the skin). Not only can it be used to add an eyeliner-like effect to the eyelids, it can also be performed to add permanent lip color, blush-on and, in rare cases, to lift and shape-shift the eyebrows. Cosmetology is a fairly new and very popular branch of medical science and allows patients (almost always women) to hide scars and age spots effectively.

People choosing this kind of treatment, must be aware of the fact that though cosmetic tattooing is in itself a harmless procedure, the hygiene and safety measures taken by the cosmetologist or at the salon are of tantamount relevance. Though only less than one percent of the people undergoing the procedure develop allergic reactions, the equipment used can be a potent carrier of infection and disease.

The Process And Aftereffects

The process in itself is quite simple. After assessing the skin type and the particular profiling of skin area to be "tattooed" with makeup, the cosmetologist finely fills in the desired colour in the desired areas of the eyes, lips, and eyebrows. Immediate results can be clearly seen with respect to change in color of the skin of treated areas. In fact, the overall effect is more or less that of applying normal make up to the skin. In some cases, the immediate results might look a bit harsh, because the colour takes at least two days to permeate into the dermis from the epidermis.

After a few days or weeks, the permanent make up works like a charm and remains unaffected for up to a number of years. With the passage of time, exposure to the elements, stress levels, and other emotional factors may cause the color to lose effect gradually. The sun remains the biggest enemy of the skin and it can't be fooled by cosmetic tattooing.

What Can Go Wrong?

Besides minor infections and allergic reactions, the chances for which are rare, the one thing that can go wrong is the incorrect intensity and incorrect shade of the color being used. Thousands of women undergo stress because they did not plan with the cosmetologist as to what features need to be enhanced and what colors and shades are to be used. The result - you get a bad makeup day that lasts for years on end!

But, there is a solution to this as well, cosmetic tattoo removal. Though it isn't as easy as tattooing the make up on, it is not impossible to take it off. Laser resurfacing or dermabrasion, also known as chemical exfoliation, are two techniques most commonly used for the removal of cosmetic tattooing. The laser breaks down the pigment injected during the cosmetic tattooing process. It may take more than one sitting to satisfactorily remove the injected makeup.

For anybody who wants a fresh as a daisy look all through the day, for years on end, cosmetic tattooing seems to be the answer. But like all other treatments, it also poses its risks.
