Inspired by true events and set in contemporary Ireland, John Deery’s 'Conspiracy of Silence' is a film that fearlessly explores the issues of repressed sexuality and forced celibacy within the Catholic priesthood. The film begins with the expulsion of seminary students, Daniel (Jonathan Forbes) and Niall, and the suicide of Father Frank Sweeny, a well respected and loved member of the church.

Local reporter Dave Foley (Jason Barry -'Valkyrie' and 'Titanic') begins to pursue both stories, uncovering the fact that Father Sweeny was both gay and HIV positive and that Daniel and Niall were expelled because of homosexual accusations. Desperately wanting to clear his name, Daniel agrees to speak with Foley about the accusations. Aside from struggling to clear his name and be re-instated, Daniel also struggles to choose between the priesthood and his long time girlfriend, Sinead.

While Foley unearths a cover up that includes high ranking members of the Catholic priesthood, Daniel challenges the church’s stand on celibacy. Both Daniel and Foley are forced to face off against the Catholic church and to come to terms with issues in their own lives.

'Conspiracy of Silence' is a controversial and provocative film that addresses the present day issue of mandatory celibacy within the Catholic priesthood and the church’s attempts to cover up homosexuality within its ranks. It has even been referred to as 'the film the Catholic church doesn't want you to see.'

Irish writer/director John Deery received recognition at both the Cannes and Sundance film festivals for his compelling screenplay. 'Conspiracy of Silence' was also nominated for awards at several film festivals worldwide, including festivals in Montreal, Hamburg and Warsaw. The film also received official recognition from the American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles.

The purpose of 'Conspiracy of Silence' is not just to tell a story of a few people, but to initiate discussion regarding celibacy and sexuality within the Catholic church. It is also the hope of those involved in the making of the film that it will open debate about the impact of sexuality and celibacy not just within the Catholic priesthood, but within the worldwide Catholic community.
