If you get your impressions of California from watching television shows filmed in the Los Angeles area, there is a lot you don’t know. This is a huge state that varies tremendously from one point to another.

If what you know about California is based on the TV shows you have been watching, you have a lot to learn. This huge state is very diverse. As an example, we can look at Crescent City which is in the upper northwest corner, as opposed to Barstow in the lower southeast corner. Crescent City is near the shore and has about 70 inches of rain each year, with an average high temperature in July of 65 degrees. An average July temperature in Barstow is 102 degrees with an annual rainfall of no more than 5 inches of rain. The rest of the state has every climate in between.

Don't throw away your snow equipment when you move to California. You can do all sorts of winter activities throughout the California mountains. One of the benefits of living in the Sacramento area is that the mountains are only a two hour drive away in one direction, while the ocean is two hours away in the other direction.

Few homes in California have basements, so you may want to get rid of extra items in a yard sale. Most California houses are built on a slab foundation. Basements are generally located in houses constructed on a hill in which the slope permits an addition to the foundation. You won't find many basements in this state, but you will find numerous self-storage units to store the items you do not want to throw away.

Since most yards are small and only require an electric mower, you can leave behind your big riding mower. It is recommended that your landscaping be drought tolerant due to water shortages.

Decent fences enable good relationships with neighbors in California. Most fences are made of redwood and stand six feet tall. Due to fenced in yards, children and pets will have a safe haven. Backyard barbecues are common in California. Fences also enable homeowners to shield their carefully kept gardens from the unsightly view of a neighbor’s untidy yard. I visited Pennsylvania and I was amazed at the huge yards with no fences. I was curious what happened to their dogs while they were at work. Not many people like to look at rusty lawn furniture and above ground pools. Private yards are preferable, even if they're smaller.

California most definitely has more that its fair share of earthquakes. You can view a government website if you want to know of any seismic activity in California. Every day there are a number of minor earthquakes, they rarely make the news. Mobile home parks are not susceptible to earthquakes like they are to tornadoes. You should know what to do in case an earthquake occurs, but don't live in constant fear that one is about to occur.

California is home to many different people from many different backgrounds, and this is reflected in the multi cultural restaurants that are found throughout the state. So start packing, and get ready to move to California. There is tons of room for you.
