It was the shortest woman’s final since 1986, when Martina Navratilova won her third title here in an hour. Clijsters is the U.S. Open champion defense made quick work of Vera Zvonareva in the afternoon singles Saturday's final, 6-2, 6-1. The match lasted exactly 59 minutes, which was nine minutes less than it was Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to play the fifth set of their semifinal in the afternoon. Djokovic and Federer took the final 88 points. The women's final was decided after 89.

Clijsters daughter, Jada, joined her on the court after she accepted her trophy and a check for $ 2.2 million, $ 1,700,000 for winning the title and a $ 500,000 bonus for his performance in the summer the series on hard courts.

Clijsters said that whenever she step out on the court it feels like coming home and it makes her play so much better. Clijsters has now won 21 consecutive matches at the U.S. Open. She won her first title here in 2005, before she retired from the sport. She has never won a Grand Slam singles title outside the U.S. Open.

Throughout this tournament, Clijsters, who lives part of the year in New Jersey with his family, has actually been treated as a local favorite. Even before she retired in 2007, Clijsters, always smiling, always cheerful, was one of the most popular players on tour. There is more to be more so since her return she began a year ago. When she won the U.S. Open last year, she was playing her third tournament of the season.

She has played a lot more this year, with mixed results. In Saturday's final, however, she was almost perfect. She hit sharp angles from the start and Zvonareva ran side by side all night. She finished the match with 17 winners and 15 errors.

The recent history of women in the U.S. Open final one is not a story. The last time a final here was a full three sets was in 1995 when Steffi Graf defeated Monica Seles. In the years since then, 12 finals have lasted an hour and a half or so. By winning a mere three games, Zvonareva tied a dubious record: no finalist has won fewer games in the Open Era, which began in 1968.

Maybe next year will be better. There is a good possibility, however, that the winner will be the same. There is something about Clijsters in New York, her home away from home.
