Computers Make Work at Home and Telecommuting Possible

Computers at home make it possible for anyone to do at home what they often do in the office. Desktops PCs once reserved in the office are now affordable enough to become just another home appliance for the commuting office worker. You often just need to get a home version of the popular Microsoft Suite of productivity software and you’re up for it.

But there are certain positions that make work at home ill-advised if not irrelevant to the nature of work you do. If you have to man a store for direct customer contact, physically manage a plant inventory and operation, work in a factory that requires manual labor to put out a final product, take calls in a contact center or to visit clients and suppliers often, you still have to dress up and commute to your place of work.

But many organizations are implementing work-at-home as a means to save on operating costs. Many companies are saving on real estate office rental costs that would have been taken up as office space in positions that are already earmarked for work-at-home. With it comes electricity savings as well.

While you can do work at home, there are certain situations that require more than a just a stand-alone PC to make it happen. You may need a tether to the office servers and mainframe computers to access the application and databases you need that will never be accommodated on your PC due to factors like storage limitations and mostly security concerns.
You need to access these servers to access corporate emails as well. In short, you need a form of data connectivity to be able to remain in touch with your boss and colleagues. The telephone and the mobile cell phone can be used. But for the most part, you need internet connection.
The Internet Completes Work-at-Home
It’s actually the Internet that drove work-at-home a reality. The phenomenon had its roots in the middle of the last decade when pundits started talking about shattering the confines of the office and the home with the emergence of the internet phenomenon. It took a while for companies to get a handle of the idea and get rid of their century-old post industrial concept of office work as the only place for productive labor to happen. But over time, with positions identified for it, the idea caught on. The immobilization of the World Trade Center in the mid 90s when workers couldn’t get into the building became an unlikely test bed when corporate officers had to work at home to get things done. Thanks to their PCs and laptops as well as internet connection, it was clearly proven that office productivity need not be confined inside office walls. It took a colossal accident to make work form home an appealing shift from the traditional office work.
Virtual Offices
Shattering the office confines went into overdrive with the dot com phenomenon that gripped the nation towards the end of the century. The internet and the home computer extended the concept further. You don’t’ need a physical location to be a company. But it can also be abused and misused. Many online sites that offer this or that services and products do not have real office locations behind their dot com names. They often just broker the services and products that get splashed online and actually made it easier for fly-by-night operators to thrive.
But with later legislation to control dot com companies, doing business in the 21st century have never been easier with online commerce and employees working at their leisure at home but made accessible though the internet. GP
