A holiday feast is not complete without a scrumptious pie. Pies, like cakes, are a symbolic dessert on special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays and holidays. They have been part of the holiday banquet for centuries that it is hard to imagine a holiday gathering without pies. Sweet, fruity and crisp, pies are certainly one of the greatest desserts that families and friends can share. There are many different types of pies that you can try baking for the holidays and some examples are listed in this article.
Apple Pie
Apple pies or tarts have been a favorite dessert since at least the middle ages. Between two layers of crust, slices of apples are laid with a dash of cinnamon and some butter and sugar. The top crust is usually slashed to let steam escape while baking. There are varying versions of apple pie too. Some like to sprinkle nutmeg to add some kick into their apple pie recipe. Some ingredients that you may add to the basic apple pie recipe include raisins, blueberries, cherries and caramel. Whatever apple pie version you prefer, it would taste better if served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Pecan Pie
This pie was invented by French immigrants in Louisiana. They got inspired to create pecan pie after discovering the nuts through the Native Americans. Pecan pie is a traditional American recipe. The pecans are mixed with eggs, butter, syrup, sugar and vanilla to create a sweet and tasty filling. Crushed or sliced pecans can also be used as garnish. Like apple pie, pecan pie is served with a huge scoop of ice cream. Some modified recipes of pecan pie involve the use of chocolate, pineapples and whiskey. In the southern part of the US, pecan pie is a very common dessert.
Pumpkin Pie
The Native Americans were also the same people who introduced pumpkin to European settles in the US, resulting to the creation of another loved dessert: the pumpkin pie. In baking pumpkin pie, you may use either canned pumpkin or fresh pumpkin. Expert bakers recommend fresh pumpkins because they give out a very rich flavor that can make your recipe phenomenal. For the basic pumpkin pie recipe, sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins with a diameter of 6 to 8 inches are usually used.
The baking procedure for pumpkin pie is simple. Begin by cutting the pumpkin in half. Using a ladle, spoon or ice cream scoop, scrape off the seeds of the pumpkin. Soften the pumpkins by putting them in a microwave oven. Before heating, place them in a container with at least two inches of water. It would take about 20 minutes before the pumpkin is cooked in the microwave oven. Alternatively, you can use the double broiler to cook the pumpkin.
Once the pumpkin is soft and ready, peel the skin, puree the remaining part and allow it to cool. Be sure to drain excess water before preparing the filling. Mix in cooled pumpkin puree, milk, flour, egg, butter and spices such as cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Pour mixture into pie crust and bake until ready. Finish off by adding a huge gallop of whipped cream on the top.
