Stand up paddling is growing to become as the most fun and exciting watersport for vacation lovers. Several people make their way to the beach and go for stand-up paddling to taste the excitement one might get out of it. The real experience from SUP lies in the way we handle it. If we don’t have the knack to do it, SUP won’t turn out to be as exciting as you thought. That’s why, you need to know about these common paddling mistakes, so as not to ruin the fun.
1. CHOOSING A WINDY DAY TO TRY SUP
For an activity like SUP, weather conditions are of great importance. On a day with light winds, stand up paddling is easy to handle. On the flip side, too windy a day can create a frustrating paddling experience. This is because your body develops wind resistance which can make paddling quite challenging. Not to mention the difficulty in learning how to balance during this time.
2. HOLDING THE PADDLE BACKWARDS
Holding the paddle in the wrong way is a mistake any beginner could easily make. SUP paddles are designed in such a way that it must be held straight up and down. The blade is to be pointed facing the front of the board, so that the stroke becomes effective and easy.
3. PADDLING DOWNWIND
Paddling in the direction of the wind might appear to be an easy experience at first, but gradually it would turn to be stressful. Doing so makes you vulnerable to drift downwind when not paying attention. For a hassle-free experience, point your paddle board into the wind first so that when you’re tired, you can turn around and have your board moved by wind to get back to your starting point.
4. STARING DOWN AT THE BOARD
When we are learning to do something new, we have the tendency to look down probably due to fear and lack of confidence. The same would apply when learning SUP. However, this could make your learning process difficult as balancing gets tough. Hence, try learning by standing up, relaxing your legs and look straight throughout as you try to master it.
5. STANDING BACKWARDS ON THE BOARD
Before you begin to paddle, see how you’re standing. SUP boards come in different sizes and shapes, preferably long and oval shaped. To help differentiate between the front and back sides of the board, remember than the end with an ankle strap at the top and a fin on the bottom is the rear side of the board. Stand on the center of the board and face towards the front end of the board.
Be wary of these common SUP mistakes and create a delightful paddling experience this holiday season!
