Commencement speeches should be guidebooks for life.

Commencement speeches should plant the seed of enthusiasm for the future.
Commencement speeches are as different as those who speak them. After all the speaker may be the Dean or a guest speaker who has accomplished something wonderful in his or her life. A past pupil or alumina is often asked to give the address based on his o he success having left the school or university.

Yet whoever speaks at the graduation ceremony faces a real challenge. Their commencement speech should inspire and encourage the graduates while still respecting the fact that they are all different. That means what is suitable for one student is not always suitable for another.

So the speech should speak of the future generally and how those are going to manage it and benefit from it. It should encourage them to be adaptable in some ways but firm in their ethics and standards. It should tell them of the wonderful opportunities that the world provides and of what they themselves can offer the world. In an age of greed it is no harm whatsoever to point out to the privileged that the world is also full of need.

Such commencement speeches should mention the gratitude that students owe their parents and tutors. It should encourage them to have a respect for others and, of course, for their alma mater. If the speaker has accomplished something special he should speak of it and how it formed his life and remind them that he too was like them not too many years ago.

In this age of technology the graduates will find it easy to communicate. A speaker should encourage them to do so because friendships made in school or college often last a lifetime and are very valuable both personally and professionally.

The speaker should remember that he is speaking to young people who enjoy a joke and who certainly will celebrate their graduation following the ceremony. So his speech should have something in it about the form of those celebrations.

Naturally what you say to students who are leaving High School and those who have qualified in, say law or medicine, will be different. The High School students still have to choose what they intend doing and the graduates have at least a basic degree in something they have chosen. The different speeches should help mention where they are standing on this road of life. In fact a good commencement speech will give a student a map to follow for a successful and fulfilling life.
