Kerala is a mural painted by God, varied and rich in its hue and texture. Predominantly verdant, this piece of land in Malabar Coast in south western India, is nestled between Western Ghats and Arabian Sea. Renowned for its pristine beaches, mist shrouded hill stations, serene backwaters, exotic flora and fauna and suave art forms- Kerala is a hot spot of tourism.
Of the many places to visit in Kerala, the prominent beaches are Kovalam, Cherai, Varkala, Kappad, Muzhappilangad and Bekal. Of these the more often frequented beach is Kovalam. This idyllic beach location is in southern part of Kerala and is thirteen kilometers away from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Kovalam is easily accessible through road and this makes it a favorite for locals. The tourism potential of Kovalam was discovered by Travancore kings and is one of the oldest known tourist spots of India. Kovalam shot into limelight when in nineteen seventies hippies swarmed to this place. It is formed of three crescent shaped beaches and the sea is safe for swimming and beaches ideal for sunbathing. Apart from that, the accommodation facilities available are of high class. The single most thing that endears Kovalam to tourists is the fact that it has not lose its innocence despite being highly commercialized and crowded.
The prominent hill stations in Kerala are Munnar, Wayanad, Wagamon, Peermade, Nelliampathi and Ponmudi. Munnar is the most important of the lot. This gorgeous paradise is situated about one thousand and six hundred meters high, near the confluence of three rivers. Endowed with exotic flora and fauna, embellished with green carpet of manicured tea gardens, home to cascading waterfalls and gushing brooks and adorned by colonial bungalows, Munnar is an ideal destination for trekking and mountain biking. Some places of notable worth nearby to Munnar are Eravikulam National park, Anamudi Peak, Mattupetty, Pallivasal, Chinnakanal, Anayirangal, Rajamalai, Echo Point, Top station, Tea Museum etc. In Eravikulam National Park, an endangered species – Nilgiri Tahrs are found in its last vestige of sustenance.
Kerala Packages will be incomplete without the element of Backwater tourism. Backwaters are an exclusive Kerala phenomenon. It is a complex network formed of manmade and natural canals and inlets, estuaries of over forty rivers and five lakes. Backwaters makes for fascinating landscape - with shores lined by abodes, swaying coconut trees, verdant flora and lush green paddy fields, fishing nets and various activities of life and waters embellished by water flowers especially water lilies. A cruise through backwaters savoring this landscape is mind blowing experience. Although backwaters are an all Kerala occurrence, the epicenters of backwater tourism are Alleppey, Kochi and Kollam.
Houseboats are now the buzzwords of backwater tourism. Houseboats are the modern luxurious versions of erstwhile “Kettuvallams”. “Kettuvallams” were used to transport rice and household items through backwaters. They came with thatched roofs over wooden hulls to offer protection from elements of nature. Although the shape remains the same, Houseboats are two to three storied affairs with one to five bedrooms on offer. Apart from sleeping space, there is a dining space and sit out – open on all sides from where tourists can savor the landscape while meandering through the backwaters.
Kumarakom deserves special mention in backwater tourism. It is a tiny village which is blessed by all bounties of Kerala backwaters.
