PDF or Portable document Format has been developed for the purpose of platform independent document exchange. It is an independent format as it does not depend on the computer’s operating system, software and hardware which make it different from other document formats. The characteristics, features and advantages of the PDF document format are as follows:
• The major facility that PDF document offers is its platform independency. The PDF document can easily be viewed by users of different operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Mac and others.
• Since it is non- editable it does not allow any unauthorized access or modification. It behaves as a read-only file thus the content of the file remains protected.
• Using PDF file, the users can accommodate both text and images. Further, the texts and the graphics layout remain fixed and unchanged. This feature becomes highly beneficial when documents are shared globally on internet by publishing e- books or journals.
• The size of PDF documents is comparatively less than the other documents having same content.
• Sharing PDF documents over the net takes much less time rather than sharing other documents.
• Users can apply several security parameters on the documents they have created and may encrypt the file to prevent undesired access.
The aforementioned factors clearly indicate that there is a great need of using PDF document format to create as well as share informatory messages over the net. Though PDF files undoubtedly provide better file manageability but may lead to some cumbersome situation when one has to deal with multiple PDF files. It’s easy to handle single PDF and share it on the web but, dealing with multiple PDFs can confuse professional users also. Looking at such situation, the concept of PDF merging was coined. There are some real life scenarios which compel you to combine PDF files into a single one.
Take an example that you have to convert multiple PDF files into Excel documents. Converting each PDF file creates individual sheets in Excel. But you have to send a report by combining all the Excel files together. If there is limited number of files then you can easily opt for Copy & Paste technique. But what about the files if the number is 100 or more? You simply can’t follow copy & paste mechanism to merge all the Excel files. A better remedy can be given which involves the process to combine PDFs rather than the Excel sheets. If you combine the smaller chunks of PDF files into a single one, you can easily get a single Excel sheet while converting it from PDF to Excel.
To Combine PDF files efficiently, you can take help of third party commercial software which are available nowadays. Further, the data integrity and consistency should be the big matter of concern means, after combining the PDF files the content should not be altered. Kernel for PDF Split & Merge tool is such a software that accurately merges multiple PDF files into single document format.
