Invitations set the style of your wedding. Keep the theme and colors of your wedding consistent with your choice of invitations. A playful theme is Public Garden-Cornflower and a more formal theme is Treasured Gems. Even those who can't attend will keep your invitation as a remembrance of your wedding.

Traditional weddings dictated the use of engraved heavy weight cream or white paper and formalized phrasing on the invitation. While weddings remain classic, modern weddings allow for more leeway in invitations and other wedding stationary such as response cards, thank you notes, place cards, announcements, programs and menu cards. A great example of a modern colorful invitation is Bloom which comes in lots of different colors.

Announcements are sent to those who aren't invited to the wedding. Since they announce the wedding in most cases they are sent after the event. Announcements aren't used as much now as they used to be. Don't send them to people who you didn't invite because of budget or seating constraints but that you hope will send a gift anyway.
Invitation ensembles may be customized with your wording and coordination of colorful envelope liners and ribbons or the entire package can be designed just for you. Fashionable Fall ensemble is perfect for a fall wedding. Water's Edge works well with a beach theme or location wedding.
Invitations should be sent at least six weeks before the wedding. Order enough invitations for the entire guest list plus additional for errors in addressing or to send out when other invitees have declined.
Most invitations have a minimum order quantity. In most cases it's cheaper to order 10 or 20 more at the original time of order than to have to order the minimum quantity again just to cover the additional guests. A good rule of thumb is order 10% more than you think you will need. Keep in mind that those who receive an invitation only two to three weeks out may guess that they were on the second string guest list.
Don't think you can call them on the pretense of asking whether they're coming and then act all surprised when they say they never received the invitation. Heart to Heart is a nice example of a colorful modern invitation that sets the tone for a fun reception.
It's not a good idea to assume that a certain percentage of guests will decline and invite more than your budget or location can handle. If you have sent out "save the date cards," everyone who received that card should be sent an invitation, unless of course they have already declined. Try to coordinate the feel of the save the date card with the style of the invitation. People realize that since the cards are sent out six months before the wedding date that all the decisions haven't been made yet.
An example of how modern invitations can be customized is Perfect Paisley, a modern design which sports a band of paisley print across the bottom of the invitation. The color of the band is repeated as a border around the invitation. The print and band is available in 12 different colors. The envelopes may match the paisley color or contrast with it. The names of the bride and groom may be in a matching or contrasting color. A satin ribbon of contrasting or matching color can be wrapped around the invitation.
Print your address as the mail to and the return address on response cards. The envelopes should be stamped as a courtesy to your guests. Stamping them means you're more likely to get their response sooner which helps you plan the reception. Word the response card so that the only response is yes or no. Leaving a blank for number of guests could mean your reception cost quickly get out of limits.
Assembling the invitations with all the folding and stuffing might seem like an overwhelming task. It doesn't have to be. Invite a few of your best friends to crease, fold, stuff and arrange ribbons such as the Vintage which includes a tri-folded invitation, wrapped with a satin ribbon, enclosing response cards and envelopes.
If the invitations aren't going to be addressed by a calligrapher and many brides avoid that expense, the cards may be addressed at the party as well. Make sure you have a list that is clearly printed, preferably by computer for clarity rather than hand printed with the formal names of all the guests. That list will make it easier to check off who accepted and who has declined as well.
Don't guess at how much postage will be required to send your invitations. Take a fully completed set to the post office and have it weighed. If you are including extra cards for some, such as a map, or other information for some guests and not for others take both sets to be weighted. Invitations that have insufficient postage will be returned to you. That's a waste of postage and invitations, not to mention that additional invitations may have to be ordered.
