Cold Chisel is a unique Australian rock and roll band that was formed in 1973. Members of the original band included Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss on vocals and guitar, Steven Prestwich on drums, Phil Small on bass guitar and Don Walker playing the piano.
The band has always been able to strike a chord with various age groups due to their versatility in music styles. Their core strength has come from the significant input made from band members with the combination of multiple singers and songwriters.
Cold Chisel’s songs cover numerous issues including those affecting young students and the working class. Their rock music touches on the emotions of anger, fear, hope, alienation; amongst other emotions.
This pub rock band also drew inspiration from other similar bands of the 70s like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and the like. Their song writer Don Walker was also influenced by Bob Dylan.
Over the years the group has seen bitter breakups, reunions and the death of Steve Prestwich due to brain tumour complications. Some of their huge hits were in the 70s and 80s, including "You Got Nothing I Want", "Forever Now" and "When the War is Over".
In 2011, they released all their songs digitally. Most of the albums hit the top 100 and many of the songs made it to the very top of the best hits chart. The song ‘Khe Sanh’ was placed in the top 40, 35 years after it was first released.
All Cold Chisel fans should know that they are currently touring Australia and New Zealand. It has been eight years since they last performed nationally in Australia. Cold Chisel is also performing at Wellington and Auckland, in New Zealand for the first time since 1983. The Light The Nitro Tour kicked off in October with the final gig scheduled in December at Brisbane. Opening acts included local blues guitarist Junior Bowles and The Ghost Hotel.
Fans can expect the band to play ‘Khe Sanh’, including a whole range of other songs that include Flame trees, Cheap Wine, Forever Now, When The War is over, Bow River, Choir Girl, My baby, Standing on the portside, Janelle, Rising sun, Never Before, Conversations, Juliet and The Things I Love In You.
The Light the Nitro tour has proved to be a success and many rock music fans are reliving the magic they grew up with. There has even been talk of a new studio album, coinciding with their performance (scheduled for a 2012 release).
The tour has also received good reviews with the rock icons not disappointing their fans. Many of the shows were staged under all-weather big top tents that have been specially constructed. The awesome sound and lighting and various other effects made the tour an unforgettable experience.
With the The Nitro Tour coming to an end, Cold Chisel’s renewed spirit and energy will not quickly fade away as this band is more than something to cross off your bucket list. They are undoubtedly the best Australian rock band and have enthralled fans and music lovers of all ages for nearly four decades.
